Man killed trying to rescue dog from burning home

http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/man-dies-trying-rescue-dog-burning-armstrong-co-ho/ncHbW/

Deputy coroner Brian Myers said Terry Lynn Verner and his cousin were
able to get out of the home when the fire first started, but Verner
went back inside to try to save his dogs.

"They heard the dog yelping. The gentleman tried going back inside the house and that’s the last time he was seen,” Myers said.

Firefighters
said the blaze was reported around 2 a.m. at a home on Rural Village
Road in Plumcreek Township. Officials said Verner’s body was found near
the front door.

Fuck.

Wasn't there a Marine or a Soldier in A-stan that died trying to get his dog out of a barracks fire?

WTF

My kids, yes.  My pets?   Sorry, no.   I would feel REALLY bad about it, but leaving my family fatherless because of the pets would NOT make things any better...

After the fire where a little boy died I added five smoke detectors to give me the best chance of early alerting and the most time to get everyone out safely.  That includes my canine boy.

You know his plan probably didn't involve dying. Most people hearing their pet yelping might have gone in too. Tragic

It isn't stupid.  We must do as much for man's best friend as they do for us.  He tried and failed, unfortunately, but he tried nonetheless.

The first thing I thought when I was reading the title was "They shot him so we wouldn't burn to death?"  glad to see that wasn't the case.

This outcome sits a lot better with me than one in which someone prevented him from going.  Although, in that case he would still be alive.

Still, he was the master of his fate and I salute him.

I guess the dogs still died?

I would have gone back in to save my dogs as well.

somewhat related... today I saw a injured dog on the side of the road flailing in pain, I turned around and pulled over to help but it was too late. I held it in my arms as it passed away. no tags, but had a collar. Animal Control took him away. Ive been depressed over it all day.

I love dags. mans best friend for sure.

Couldn't know what I'd do until I was in that position.  Until my son there was little that I loved more than my dog.  The most loyal companion I could ever wish for.

I don't reckon he intended for that to be the outcome.

When someone gets shot in a movie theater I don't think "I'd never die just to see a movie" or say "Holy shit, no way I'd die just get to the other side of the street" when I hear about someone getting hit by a car in an intersection.

On the other hand, before we lost our dog, if I heard him being burned to death I'd sure as shit try to save him.

This is a wakeup to know what you would do before it happens.  It was reported to be a trailer home so probably not very large.

Grab the dogs on the way out.

Consider getting a smoke hood to give you a few more seconds.

Here is one review on a few smoke hoods.  I have no idea what the best one is today..

Do you even logic bro?  The odds are getting shot and dieing in a movie theater are pretty low.  The odds of dieing in a house fire with no protective gear on are pretty fucking high.

I would of done the same. As was said before my dog would give up his life for me, my wife of my 2yo son. I owe him enough to try and save his. That being said, my dog is always at my left side so he probably would make it out with us.

Aaahhhh hahaha.  A clever "Do you even _____, bro" line.  I've never seen one of those before, least of all on AR15.com; how innovative.

Do I "logic"?  Yes, I "logic" quite a bit.

Does someone who has just escaped a burning building and hears his beloved friend being burned to death "logic"?  That's questionable.

Does every person in every potentially dangerous situation "logic"?   With all the "logic-ing" that I'm sure you're capable of, I bet you can figure it out.  I'm sure you can extrapolate those results to whichever analogy you find more palatable than being shot in a movie theater.
