Scored Rhino box set of 5 original albums:

Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash
Hootenanny
Let It Be
Tim
Pleased to Meet Me

Cool that Rhino was able to score the rights to re-release these classic 80's indie albums.

Good times.  I saw them a handful of times over the years and used to wonder how they could function at their level of intoxication, all the while attempting to play absolutely anyone's and everybody's songs.  From Hank to Hendrix and everything in between, they'd give it a try.  Only live band I ever saw who would actually attempt to play "Freebird"....over and over again.  They really loved their fans.

I like that song " Johnny's gonna die", "rattle snake" and " here comes a regular".
Some of their lyrics and ballady type songs are quite moving.

I was fortunate enough to see the 'mats in '86 when they were still the original lineup (Bob Stinson was still with them).

I'd like to see the documentary "Color me obsessed" but the film had very limited distribution and I've yet to find it. You can see full-length uncut interviews from which the film was made (YouTube).

From Kids Don't Follow to Skyway, they were one of the best bands, ever, one of the top 3 of the 1980s.

Possibly the best talent to emerge from the 80's.

Bob Stinson died in 1995. His body simply wore out from the years of booze and drugs. Drummer Chris Mars turned to painting and reportedly barely acknowledges his affiliation with the 'mats.

Paul Westerberg has released a bunch of stuff as a solo artist but I've not listened to any of it. The only thing I have is the soundtrack to the film "Open Season".

Tommy Stinson (bass) went on to play with both Gun  'N Roses and Soul Asylum.

One of my favorite 80's indie compilations was "The Wailing Ultimate", a 1987 release of bands on the Homstead Records label.

Truly esoteric stuff, and I've seen several of the bands featured on it (Volcano Suns, Big Dipper, Salem 66, and Great Plains)

If you were too cool for school you were a fan of Homestead!

Great band. That was a heady time to live in Minneapolis.

Another one of my fav 80's indie compilations was "The Bigtime Syndrome" which featured music by Love and Rockets, Dumptruck, Exploding White Mice, Alex Chilton, etc.

Very listenable. One of my favorite tracks is a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Keep Dancin' (got to give it up)".

It was also a great time to live in Columbus, OH which was surprisingly excellent for bands because they all played there.

After I moved back there from the Left Coast in '85 I used to hang at a small club north of the OSU campus called Staches which was torn down in '97. Shit, it's probably a Starbucks or a Chipotle now.

This place probably had a max. capacity of 150 persons and I saw all kinds of bands there: Descendents, fIREHOSE, Soul Asylum, Die Kruezen, Big Dipper, Dead Milkmen, Celibate Rifles, Butthole Surfers, Volcano Suns, and a shit ton of local bands. Nirvana played there before they hit big.

Closer to the campus area was the Newport Music Hall (formerly the Columbus Agora): Husker Du, Ramones, Jesus and Mary Chain, more Butthole Surfers, Replacements, and even Cheap Trick on a 1988 tour.

Good times.

I saw them after Slim Dunlap had replaced Bob Stinson, I think after Pleased to Meet Me. They all wore blue mechanic's overalls.

Wow, some Googling reveals that Slim had a bad stroke and Tommy and Paul toured or are touring as the 'mats. And that they are now eligible for the rock n roll hall of fame.

Do they have hot cheerleaders that slap each others asses?

If not, they who cares?

"And when they were good,
when they were good.
God got up and danced."

I can't remember the name of that song.

Not a Replacements song, but a song about them.

Another similar band were the Rave-Ups (Pittsburgh, PA).

Their "Town & Country" release is as good as anything the 'mats did and it's still widely available. Decades ago I lost possession of their "Class Clown" EP which was phenominal. I was able to grab a low-fi copy from Megaupload but have not found the replacement vinyl.

Love 'em.  In my top 20 favs, at least 10 are Mats tunes.  Paul Westerburg is an awesome writer.  Their videos are awesome in their awefulness.  They DETESTED the MTV Video culture (see:  "Seen Your Video") but the label made them make them.

This song is great:

All eyes look up to me
High above the filthy streets
Heed no bullhorn when it calls
Watch me fly and die, watch me fall

I'm the boy they can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge
Won't reach the ledge
