I almost bought a bottle of Bulleit today.  Then I remembered I pretty much fucking hate bourbon and the bottle of Knob Creek on my shelf has been sitting there half full for half a decade.

I'm a noob to bourbon, all I ever tried was last years George Stagg and I just got a bottle of Pappy 12 yr that is really smooth.

Would I like Basil if I really like Pappy ?

I live about 20 miles from Makers.  Have six fmaily members, and a grandpa who worked there. :)

Meh. The best bourbon can't even begin to touch the good Scotch offerings. I love bourbon, but I obsess over scotch. Too many restrictions on what bourbon can be and still be bourbon.

I'm partial to Bulleit. I will try some Basil Hayden's to see what I think. I tied Buffalo Trace on Arfcom's recommendation and it was awful. Maybe I got a bad bottle but I gave it away to a friend who said it was great.

Pappy is a hell of a bourbon but most of its popularity is due to the price.

I'm new to this.  I've tried a few bottles of scotch that I really like (Balvenie Double Wood, Caol Ila 12 year, Bunnahabhain 12 year).  What makes bourbon different? Is bourbon a type of whiskey?

Pappy Van Winkle 20 yr. (I like it better than the 23, more flavor. The 23 gets a little oaky)

I would kill for some 4 Roses Limited Edition Small Batch. But until I have it, it's Pappy all the way

For everyday pours, I'll take Rare Breed, Baker's and Van Winkle Lot B. Those three are the best on the market.  Better than Knob Creek, Woodford, Maker's or anything else out there.

Basil/Knob Creek/Bakers/ Bookers

Exactly all the same bourbon, diluted to different proof.

If you love Basil, just try some knob creek with an ice cube or two.

Having some Elijah Craig for the first time - it's really close to woodford and about 8 bucks cheaper

I'd like to try some next to a regular Small Batch to see what the difference is.  Like most things, I suspect the value on bourbon diminishes greatly once you get past the $30-$40 range.  I'd love to see some blind taste tests of super-bourbons vs the better, widely available brands.  Wine snobs have been exposed; it wouldn't surprise me if bourbon doesn't work the same way.

I like the regular Small Batch more than the regular Single Barrel.  The Single Barrel is good, but I think the Small Batch has a more rounded and deeper flavor.

Basil is not the same bourbon.  It is Beam's higher rye recipe.  It is from the same recipe that they make Old Granddad.  And, for the money, Old Granddad 114 is great stuff.

I didn't touch burbon until I was in my 40's.  I come from a whiskey drinking family in a whiskey drinking culture.

I don't drink scotch anymore, I just enjoy bourbon much more.  It just flat out tastes better to me.
