They piped him ashore. CMDCM Grgetich leaned in and quietly told me how significant that honor was and who it’s usually reserved for as we headed towards the gangplank. Hearing “Electrician’s Mate Second Class William Bud Cloud, Pearl Harbor Survivor, departing” announced over the 1MC was surreal.

That was a great thing for Dewey to do for that Old Sailor.  I was not surprised when I received an email a few weeks ago about it.  He went to his grave a happy man.
I was aboard Dewey with my family for the Change of Command of DESRON 21 just last September.  We were invited by the incoming Commodore (Old friend and neighbor.) so we flew out for the week.  Spent a great time in San Diego and were honored to enjoy a great ceremony then personal tour of the ship.  Having served on seven old destroyers myself, I was most impressed by the Dewey and her fine crew.
Dewey's CO is a Mustang (Like me...) who went unrestricted line.  He is the guy in khakis and glasses in the picture.  His is an awesome fighting ship with a great crew.
RIP Sir.

ETA:  The day I retired and was piped over the side was very moving.  My last salute to the ensign took me a while.

I thought those names sounded familiar...

They (CO & XO) were both Department Heads on HOWARD when I was there!

RIP
The military is the only part of our government that is worth a dam. They go the extra mile to honor our veterans be it taps at a vets funeral or granting the last wish of a vet.

I was piped off my ship for simply being a plankowner and that was surreal as fuck.  This guy...Boss status indeed.

Screw them. I did that for all of the guys who PCS'd off ship.

That is very cool. As impressed as the gentleman was to be honored by the crew of the new ship, I'll bet they were pretty impressed to have a crewman from the original ship when it was at Pearl Harbor. Rest in peace, Mr. Cloud. God bless.
