I was watching a Discovery Channel program about Marines training on the M1, and noticed (for the first time) that the main gun ammo didn't have a "cartridge case."  After the round is fired, there is no ejected shell.  It's "caseless ammo."  So, how is it constructed?  And how does the breech seal?

There is a stub (really short case), which is ejected. The breechblock seals the breech, of course. I'll get back to you on the rest of it.

Good job, Osprey!! You can see the portion below the "band" is the little stub casing. The casing with the breechblock provides the "seal" you were asking about.
