My favorite light is the Fire Foxes 4. It's a tiny, rechargeable 60 watt HID with 6000 lumens.

In all seriousness, can't do wrong with Fenix, Nitecore, Sunwayman, Maratac... Even the old and cheap Inova in the pic above would be perfectly adequate for a do-all light and work fine in a pinch as a defensive light employed via the Harries technique |

If you can handle $277, tactical night vision company has the Surefire M3LT. I have one and it replaces a plug in spotlight for most things I do anymore. It is BRIGHT and very high quality. I'd recommend it.

Check out the Defiant brand stuff that Home Depot sells. A few models available from $25-30 including a model with 3 XM-L LEDs that claims 1,000 lumens. I am a member on Candlepower Forums and I have 7 flashlights sitting on my desk right now.
Defiant 1000 lumen light I am a bit of a cheapskate but I have bought 15+ of the Defiant lights and they are well worth the money. For Joe Homeowner you really can't go wrong. jonblack |

I have a Nitecore EA4 that uses 4 AAs and is pretty bright. At the highest brightness it is 860 lumens (which steps down to 550 after 3 minutes). Its costs just over $50, and I'm pretty happy with it. The UI takes a little getting used to, but isn't that complicated.

carried a fenix pd30 for a few years, just upgraded to the pd35 (the pd30 still works fine, but had a tool allowance to use up at work by end of year). Its like night and day plus the 18650's are much cheaper in the long run vs cr123's.
tldr: Fenix pd35 and two good batteries so you always have fresh |

It's not exactly $75, but you can pick up a new Streamlite Strion LED with wall and car charger for less than $150.
I bought one about a year ago and will never go back to cheap lights. It's bright and just plain works. |

Zebra light... This with a single 14500 re-chargeable battery will get close to 500 lumens.. 280 lumens with 1 eneloop... Nice little light, I had bought one of their head lamps after reading about them on here, and I started digging a little for a EDC light, and this was what I choose. Take some time and look up the flash lights that are recommend here on you tube, and just a quick google search, your head will spin, but you will start to figure things out. Once you understand a little bit about lights, lumens batteries and such you can make a better choice to suit your needs..

I like my Klarus XT11 and they now offer an upgraded light with about 800 lumens for about $65. While they're Chinese imports, they got favorable reviews for quality everywhere I looked. However, I'm not sure if the beam has quite enough throw to satisfy your needs. I have a feeling that their XT30 probably is a little bigger than what you're looking for, not to mention it tends to run just over $100.

I have an Extreme Beam M1000. Takes 2 18650 cells and throws light waaay out there. And is built beefy as hell.
There are tons of lights to choose from though. |

I've gotten great service from these guys Lighthound
Battery Junction is great also, and they have lots of stuff between them in your price range. The Jetbeam BC40, the OLight M3X and the Crelant 7G or 7S? are great. I don't own the BC40, but I have a Crelant and an Olight, actually 2 of each and love them. They will light up the night, and have multiple modes for when you don't need to illuminate the moon

You can upgrade your current Elzetta Modular Flashlight with one of our new High Output AVS Heads and increases output to 650 lumens on a 2-Cell Body or 900 lumens on a 3-Cell Body and you'll still have The Toughest Flashlight on the Planet with all of the advantages only Elzetta offers (fully potted electronics, solid acrylic optical lens, etc.). I missed the Olight M3X last night before Battery Junction BF sale ended. Can still get it for $10 more than it was, using the cyber Monday code. I may very well pull the trigger here in a bit - but DAMN......the light, then 18650 rechargeables and a charger.......

The nitecore EA4 Pioneer is cheaper, brighter, has a neutral tint which works better in the outdoors, and uses eneloops, which is the way to go for AAs

It sounds like you really aren't, so it shouldn't be that hard to find one that turns on. That's all you need. If you are trusting your life on a flashlight, then you can't "cheap out" and you know the company names. One of those is Surefire. Some of the lights I see listed already may as well be called Tapco. |

Also the Nitecore Intellicharger I4 has been a good one for me. I like it because I can charge my NiMh and LiON batteries interchangeably and at the same time. It's not the fastest but it takes good care of the batteries and doesn't overcharge them if you forget them.
