I don't know where bbl comes from to abbreviate barrel - but it is actually from liquid measurement, and is an OLD abbreviation.
As far as the lb/pound things, lb is from the Latin "Libra" - which translates to "weigh," IIRC. At least there is a halfway understandable reason behind that one... Look at the Periodic Table sometime, and you will see how much Latin has influenced things... FFZ |

BBL is an oilfield term, meaning Blue BarreL.
Nobody says "Blue Barrel" when they read the abbreviated "bbl", they just say "barrel". That's how it got started. |
