Increase in demand from the Chinese over the last two weeks has forced the price of Bitcoin to record-breaking highs. It rose to around $390 a few days ago just before a short sell-off, which forced the price down to the mid-300's. Less than two days later, the price has surged again, and it now threatens to break the $400 barrier which was considered outlandish not even a year ago. The total market cap currently sits around $4.36 billion dollars, and Bitcoin's popularity appears to be increasing.
Now people are starting to wonder when the increased demand will subside. Is this a temporary upswing in demand or will the price remain at this new high for the foreseeable future? With a country of approximately 1.5 billion people, the future is uncertain. ETA: For the new comers, here are some easy to use websites for up-to-date Bitcoin information! This is my favorite. I don't know why.. it's just slick, and the server is located in Ireland, I believe. BitcoinTicker: http://bitcointicker.co/ This is sort of like a sister site to the one above. It is not quite as crisp, but still really good. Bitcoinity: http://bitcoinity.org/markets This is yet another one. The info here is really good also. Bitcoin.clarkmoody: http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com/ Last but not least, another great price/volume comparison: Data.bitcoinity: http://data.bitcoinity.org/#caaaaadgaa This is probably the most powerful one of them all, but it's a paid site. They actually want some return for their efforts. Very good charting and graphs. Bitcoin-analytics: http://bitcoin-analytics.com/ This is neat to see the latest market cap with each price change. It's good to follow the similarities between BTC and LTC. Coinmarketcap: http://coinmarketcap.com/ This one is, of course, one of the originals and the "official" source of exchange comparisons. It's like the Google of the bitcoin world. Bitcoincharts: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/ Yet another good site to keep tabs on major movements in price and volume between different exchanges. It is a great companion to Bitcoincharts. Bitcoinwatch: http://bitcoinwatch.com/ This is just a fun little thing I keep loaded in a tab sometimes to just see what's happening. It's a novelty but still fun to watch occasionally. Fiatleak: http://fiatleak.com/ |

Is bitcoin being used for commerce on any significant level, or is it pure speculation at this point?

You can buy land in China with bitcoin.
Bitcoin in concept is good, but be wary of the internet kill switch or hackers who can access a purse. |

I pulled my coins at around $200 after campbx dropped dwolla. Since I paid 5USD for them over a year ago, I'm not complaining. It's way too volatile for me to invest any serious money in it, but I love the concept.
Seems like a great currency to use for the EE. |

Yeah so when I wanna get a few gallons of gas and smokes all I have to do is convince the guy behind the counter that this made up money that I want to transfer directly into his account is worth something, even though it doesn't exist anywhere except on paper. |

( However, new Bitcoins are created at an ever-decreasing rate) = ponzi

Not quite. Some places accept it. Some places provide ATM services to turn Bitcoins into cash. Some people who already have a Bitcoin wallet will allow you to transfer on the spot with a smart phone. It's in its infancy. Give it a minute. All technology takes *some* time to become full adopted. |

Less miners easier and dropping difficulty. the system is setup to finish the last coin in 2140. the adjusting difficulty is to keep it ending in 2140 and not sooner. |
