They are HIGHLY beneficial insects. I'd let it go, so it can do its good in your yard. Most kids grow out of the "catch it and keep it" phase by the time they hit Jr. High.

This time of year, and the fact that it still has its head, means it's probably a female that is looking to lay her eggs somewhere. Mantis' lay their eggs right before winter; usually have big fat abdomens. Again, probably a seriously pregnant female since after they lay their eggs they die.
Free the mantis! Free the mantis! Free the mantis! |

I had a big green one on my glass patio door for about a month, he'd sit there and chainsaw through the moths that would land on the window. Saw him eat 5, roughly a third the size of himself EACH, in less than 10 minutes.

MY 4 yr old caught one last week. we've kept it in a bug enclosure thing and feed it crickets. its pretty badass.

Will it blend?
Just kidding of course. I just set them loose outside when they get in the house. Usually after playing with them for a moment or two. They are neat and one of the few insects I don't automaticly want to kill on sight. |
