I think the targeted demographic in these "pranks" is likely to be just as fearful of the police as they are Mike Meyers with a deer rifle.
And that's probably intentional.

The (theoretically) adult idiot college kids in my area have seemingly been brought up so thoroughly in the "nerf-world," nothing bad can happen mentality that some of them have decided it is a fun prank to drive around with airsoft pistols without orange tips and pretend to rob people simply for giggles. |

They had a similar news story of a guy who has been doing the same thing as Jason with a chainsaw on some of the streets near OSU and making it a webseries on YouTube.
Going to be glad to see the "Prank Gone Wrong!" and "CCW Permit Holder Shoots Prankster!" headlines for all of about two seconds before the media lynches the victim and makes him/her the predator.

My fucking idiot neighbor did the hockey mask / chainsaw prank last haloween while I was pulling up in my truck. Full on roaring chainsaw at my window. Hand went to .45 and unclicked. What saved him was that I'm a bigger chainsaw nerd than gun nerd and instantly noticed there was no chain on it.
