you could deduct EVERYTHING though when the tax rate was at the 90% level so it is tough to compare.

Nobody who riots will get taxed that heavily.
People who do get taxed that heavily will find shelters or leave the country.

There we just a few taxes in those high tax periods. Now there are hundreds of tax streams. Added together we are probably way higher than that chart shows.

Good point - If you could still deduct credit card interest, most Americans would have a much lower tax bill than they do now.  There are definitely way fewer tax breaks than there used to be.  My point was as much about Bread and Circuses as effective tax rates.  As long as Americans have cable, internet and cheap consumer goods I don't see them rising up.  

If the tax rates are increased incrementally steadily over time, the masses will not be aware that they have been effectively rendered asset free serfs.

I'm fact, it's already happened.

Obamacare will increase the amont of income the average American will be forced to pay for health care which reduces greatly discretionary income; and in its defense of Obamacare in SCOTUS, the Democrats argued that it isn't, in fact, a tax.

The majority of wealth held by the average American, was in the form of residential real estate.

The Democrats promulgated lending policies that decimated the value of personally occupied homes thereby wiping out a huge portion of the wealth of Americans.

The entire economy is currently limping along on the premiss  of virtually free money being extended to banks and top other lending institutions, at the expense of the owners of that money; the average American, the majority of whose liquid assets are represented by bank savings deposits.

The fact is that American are already being subjected to honorous confiscatory policies and haven't picked up their muskets yet because they haven't connected the dots.

It's probably too late anyway.

Hell most aren't paying taxes so most aren't affected.

Cable tv and cell phone service used to be among the rewards of a productive lifestyle.

These days; welfare recipients expect, and receive, those perks compliments of the government which pays for it with money taken from these who work and pay taxes.

It's kinda like the europeans who for the last 65 years have been able to pay for their socialized societies because we have been paying for their defense. When you don't have to pay for a necessity like actually spending on your family, food for said family, housing, energy, phone, or medical care, you get to spend on things like monster sized flat screen TVs, extra special rims on your car, your drug habit, your booze habit, and  that other baby momma you're staying with.
