Two former workers at the Dresden nuclear power plant in Illinois are banned from working in nuclear power plants after they were accused of attempting to rob an armored car and carjacked a woman. NRC staff issued a confirmatory order to Exelon Generating Co. (NYSE: EXC) for an incident involving violations of the Behavioral Observation Program at the plant. NRC says senior reactor operator Michael J. Buhrman planned to rob an armored car in May 2012 and recruited another senior reactor operator, Landon E. Brittain, to assist. Buhrman instead pointed a gun at a woman in a store parking lot and stole her vehicle. Buhrman was apprehended for aggravated vehicular carjacking and fled the country when he was released on bail. He was tried and sentenced to 40 years in absentia this past May. Brittain has several criminal charges pending against him. The NRC said that their actions offsite demonstrated that they could not be relied upon to follow NRC requirements to protect the plant and public safety. In addition, some plant personnel knew of Buhrman’s plant to commit the crime and did not report him. from well paid to fugitives facing a 40 year stretch. only in illinois! |

But remember, that measly Brady BGC isn't good enough to weed out the ne'er do wells...

Internet high-five to someone who actually flees to another country when facing prosecution.

I am a power plant/system operator,....let me tell you, they don't let just anybody do this shit. It's tricky business.

How does this make any sense? They threw away well paying jobs to rob an armored car?

I failed the physical for a pin in my elbow from when I was 6, but I enlisted in the Navy while still in high school to do 7 years in the nuclear reactor operator program. Still kinda bummed. |

Buhrman had conversations with another Navy veteran plant operator about planning to commit bank robberies and armored car heists. Buhrman asked if he had ever seen "The Town” and mentioned that it would be cool to do something like that if he could put together a team. View Quote The well-paid senior reactor operator started attempting to recruit other workers at the Dresden nuclear power plant in order to form a gang to rob banks "to get back at the system.” View Quote |

Wow. They were SROs. They gave up six figure salaries.
SROs are typically the brightest and somewhat motivated employees. The rigorous training usually weeds out the losers. Interesting life choices here. |
|
Wow. If you asked me to pick someone out of a nuke plant that would rob an armored car, any of the SROs would probably be near the bottom of the list.

I'm not licensed, but I've done all sorts of electrical work for my own personal stuff. |

I'm in Training to be an SRO right now. It sure ain't easy, and I'm not even in class yet. If those idiots didn't give up 150K/yr I'd be surprised. The world is full of smart dumb people.
And since they were SRO's (ie supervision) they are likely not union, at least they wouldn't be at my plant. You would be surprised at the amount of people who can't comprehend the simplest rules of nuclear power. Don't come to work drunk, don't do illegal drugs. I've heard of techs and even guys with licenses losing 100+k/yr jobs for it. |

How does this make any sense? They threw away well paying jobs to rob an armored car? View Quote Based upon the more detailed link posted earlier on this page, one of the guys seemed to have a surprising amount of cash stashed away for someone in his late 20s, and divorced, and with a kid, and after posting >$20,000 cash to secure a $200,000 bond. I suspect that Burhman was already into some illegal stuff before the movie "The Town" turned him into a violent felon. The botched bank robbery was probably just the next "logical" step for somebody who kept pushing the envelope of his illegal activities. Pure speculation on my part, but the shoe seems to fit. |

Wouldn't this cause them to lose their Q clearance anyway? I'm sure that would keep them out of any plant in the country to start with.
