The problem is crony capitalism where bailouts and too-big-to-fail policies take the RISK out of capitalism and the government favors some businesses over others.  Heavy regulations make it almost impossible for competition to arise.

If I had a dollar for every Arfcommer who blamed capitalism for whatever economic problems they perceived.    It never ceases to amaze me how many here claim to be conservative/libertarian/whatever, and then vomit Marx all over us.

True, it is important to help people understand the difference between free market capitalism and crony capitalism.

For example:  The housing/financial market collapse a few years back wasn't the result of failed free market capitalism, but rather the result of the government incentivizing banks to give loans to unqualified people.  Before some of the laws passed back in 1994, banks had been more careful about giving out mortgage loans.  Government involvement directly encouraged risky loans resulting in a housing bubble and the market crash that followed.  Had the government left the market alone back in 1994, it is unlikely that we'd have experienced any housing or financial market crash the way we did.

The problem is not free market capitalism.

The problem is semi-free market capitalism. Big businesses are often able to play the political game and get perks from the government which stifle competition. These perks include subsidies, tariffs, increased environmental regulation (when you have the technology to survive it but your competitors don't), bail outs, etc.

Government, in its attempt to "fix" the free market, has opened the floodgates to this type of corruption. It is the fault of bad government.

It helps to define capitalism first. It is not what most people think it is.

Damn, you obviously don't understand that the economy is best left to the geniuses assigned to run it. Government knows best. Don't you forget it.

"Crony capitalism" is perjorative of true capitalism.  Let's call it what it is; oligarchism.

It's the fault of corrupt members of both parties and the businesses with the means to buy their favor.
