My brother sold a forum/interest website for $300k. It was massively smaller than Arf. A factor of 100 probably. It didn't have paid membership subscriptions either.

Alexa estimates are crap. They really don't mean anything. 10% of the time they are right. The rest of the time they are correct with a margin of error of +/- 20,000%. The advertising page says Arfcom gets about 4.5 million pageviews per day, that's how inaccurate Alexa is.
I won't try to guess what they are getting from the 50 ad spaces on-screen, but I would kill for millions of hits a day.

You can look at it this way. Traditional advertising methods can get you anywhere between $0.10 to $2+ per 1,000 pageviews, depending on layout, content, demographics, etc. Even $0.50 per 1,000 would mean thousands daily.
I wouldn't know how to price a single 84x28 banner, let alone when it is only 1 of of 40+. And of course, not everybody tries to maximize their income, some people are more concerned with their members than getting every dollar they can out of things. I could make more on my sites, but I refuse to advertise in ways that ticks me off when I'm browsing the web.
