Should work for hunting but I would want something bigger for SD.

Yeah, should be noisy enough to scare most bears away.

Rifle or Revolver?

I'd sy you're fine against black bears if you want to kill it. If I wanted to stop the bear, I'd step up to .44. I have no science to back this up.

I'd think a 180 gr hard cast lead would penetrate better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't really have to worry about bears, but isn't penetration more of a concern than expansion when it comes to bears?

Your doing it wrong! All you need is a small bag of garbage, throw it at the bear and problem solved, carry on about your business. They also like peanut butter and jelly sammiches. Friends foreva!

This is my way of thinking, personally.

It can be a long trip through a bear to get to his vitals.

I've never shot a bear and have no desire to, but, yeah, this.

I dreamed the other night  that I had to defend myself against an angry black bear with only my G17.

I had a book about handgun hunting written in the 70s when I was a kid and it seemed like .357 was the caliber of choice for black bear back then, .44mag was considered overkill.

Black bear usually aren't all that big. All that said I think I'd choose a .45colt if I thought it likely I'd have to shoot a black bear with a handgun that day, rather than .357.

173 gr Keith SWC hard cast is what you want.  Better have a real 357 magnum with a 6"+ barrel to  launch a full power load.

Black bears here in southern AL go about 350lbs max. 357 Hardcast out of a rifle with 16 inch barrel wouldnt be to bad but would rather have a 44.

No, yours was on stopping an attacking black bear. This is on hunting them, which is completely different. Personally, I hunt black bears with a bow. This is in the Northern part of Manitoba though, where black bears get 500+ pounds. To the guys that are saying penetration is better, these are black bears not brown bears. They have fairly thin skin compared to their bigger cousins and a .357 should work just fine. On a brown bear I want something a little bigger, say .44 or better yet a rifle or bow.

Got some  looks in NE Pa when I showed up with a Ruger Redhawk in 44 Magnum.  Backup rifle was a Marlin 1984 in 44 Mag.  State record was around 690 pounds, so maybe the other guy who pumped 3 rounds of 7-08 into "my" bear did me a favor.

For average black bears a .357 with some heavy buffalo bore loads should work out fine.  If in doubt upgrade to one of the BIG N SCARY revolvers like a 44mag or a .454 casull.

Manitoba so it's a rifle then? You will be fine. Black bears are not that tough to kill. Blood trial usually sucks though.
