A friend of mine ordered two cases of MREs from a trusted ebayer he's done a lot of business with in the past. When he checked out the status of it on the usps website it had been held at a post office for 4 days. Shortly after he received a call from the seller. He said he was notified by usps that they declared the package "undeclared hazardous materials" due to the heaters. The kicker is... the two cases were inside an old computer box. Is something like this normal? The post office would have had to open the box to see that there were MREs inside. Apparently he will not get them back.

Interesting.  How did they find out, unless one of the heaters got hot?

I would be surprised.  We can carry cases of them on our jets without any special handling,

I am going to guess the box broke open during transit and that was how they found them.

I'd be pissed. I would assume some guy will end up taking them home. I've never heard of the heaters being activated on their own. Just to be clear, the boxes were all brand new 2016 insp dates, unopened.

The only restrictions on the heaters, are the heaters by themselves, if they are packaged in the meals sealed up, there is no restrictions.  My guess is, they got opened, and someone seen the "gov property" BS on the meals/cases.

The post office x-rays a lot of stuff. That's probably how.

BTW>  the heaters are a real hazard.  Some fires have occurred in storagge units because of them.

I had two $1k+ RC gliders show up like that from USPS,   finally got the shipper to do a UPS overnight and received one in one piece.

That advertisement seems to reference individual meal pouches, not cases in transport. I still call BS.

Call BS all you want.  The information is there. I'm not going to look past the first couple hits on Google.   If you really want to know why the OP's package was intercepted, ask the Post Office.

I bought a box of MREs from the EE and it arrived at my house by USPS with just the shipping label taped to the original mre box.

MREs (Meals Ready to Eat)
The heating component is hazardous material if the MRE package has been opened and the heating unit not used.
After they have been discharged (adding water) they are no longer hazardous and can be thrown away.
Do not bring unused heating units back to the home facility.

This is from the US Forest Service Logistics Power Point.

Shouldn't be HAZMAT if the MRE is unopened.
