So why is rimfire ammo so dirty to shoot?

Not quite the heat and pressure as a centerfire.

Lead bullet and the lube they put on the bullet.

Not sure. I cleaned a few ARs tonight, one that had just over 200 rounds of wolf since it was last cleaned, and one that had had a few hundred .22lr down the bore with my ceiner adapter. The barrel I used for the ceiner was fithly, I let it soak in Hoppes to get clean

because you are unclean in thought and deed and spent to much time looking at the lesbian porn this afternoon on ARFCOM.

The copper washed bullets help out a little bit. Still a good bit of fouling and un-burned powder all over the inside of the gun though.

First two posts nailed it.

Low combustion temperature means that combustion isn't as efficient as it could otherwise be, leaving partially burned components we call "soot."

Not enough heat or pressure my friend.  But you shouldn't be cleaning any .22lr that you are using for a accuracy application until accuracy diminishes which tends to be a good while and when you do clean them you have to get them fouled back up a good bit to get them shooting. Good again.

Who cares?  It's the best invention since sliced bread!  There is nothin like a nice fall day, nothin to do, and a box of 22's in your shirt pocket and a pistol or good 22 rifle with you.  Ahhhh nothin like it.

My Anshutz 22lr have always taken 15 fouling rounds, from clean, to group again.  The trick is knowing how far to clean them so you don't have to shoot 15 shots to group again.

You shoot way more rounds of 22 and it just seems dirtier.

Who cares?  It's not like you have to clean it or anything...semi autos once in a while...bolts, never!

Less than 100% ignition by marginal priming compound may play a role too.

I'm going to follow up your galactic stupidity with some facts and shit.

.22LR grew up in a trailer park a few blocks from the industrial part of town. Her parents couldn't afford utilities so they just ran a hose from the neighbors' trailer for water and tapped into the electrical lines. Her stepdad, who receives disability for a back injury from the local bakers union, is an alcoholic with a penchant for child porn and methamphetamine. Her mother is addicted to prescription pain killers and spends more time in jail/rehab than at home, which gives stepdaddy plenty of "quality time" with the young .22LR.

Ar night, in the quiet of her tiny bedroom, .22LR cuts herself on the arms and legs with an old razor blade. The pain gives her a release from the hatred she has for her body. She hopes deep down that if she makes herself ugly enough, her stepdad will stop touching her.

She dreams of running away. Maybe hitchhiking across country to Nashville and becoming a country music sensation. But for now, she'll just continue to cut herself and maybe huff some more oven cleaner to dull the pain. After all, tomorrow is a new day.

And that's why .22LR is dirty.

At least. I'd always put a box through after cleaning.

First two posts got it.

Go shoot black powder guns for an even better demonstration of this. 5 shots and it's filthy.

Fact: Reduced heat and pressure is precisely why a quality rimfire barrel will be accurate for several hundred thousand rounds.  Fact:  Poor cleaning procedures have ruined more rimfire and centerfire barrels than not cleaning.  Fact:  It's better to wipe the action down occaisionally and NOT clean the barrel, if leading isn't a problem, than to destroy your barrel by running a rod down it all the time.  Einstein.

For me, it was when I got my AR. .22 just really doesn't do it for me anymore. Grew up shooting with it, knocking birds and pests out of trees on our property. After I was introduced to centerfire; however, I rarely ever shot it.
