I have a 98 tacoma. Back in 2008/9 or so toyota sent out a letter talking about how they had a problem with some frames rusting through and becoming unsafe on these. I took it into a dealer at the time for an inspection and they didn't find any perforation.
five years pass ... I had completely forgot about this until this morning. I was out messing around with the exhaust under the truck and noticed that there's a big ass holes rusted through one of the frame rails along the bottom. I can stick a finger through it. I went to look up my info and it turns out that I'm just a couple of months past the 98 in-service date. So 15 years plus two months. FUCK! If I had noticed this a few months ago I likely would have had toyota offer to buy back the truck at an inflated value. I heard they were giving people a "book" value + 20%, with the truck rated as excellent condition even if it wasn't. That would be like 7-8,000 for this one if true. It's a beater and probably worth parts at this point. What are my chances of talking toyota into honoring the extended warranty even though it's a couple of months past the date? I'm guessing zero, but we'll see. One of their case managers is supposed to call on Monday. |

They did complete frame replacements on many of them. It can''t hurt to ask, they might still have some laying around.
Ask your local dealer. They LOVE recall work, they get a huge check from Toyota for it. |

This one came into our local dealer the other day for an oil change. The rusted frame gave way during the service. Toyota is paying the dealer $8000 to replace the frame. It is an ongoing issue with these vehicles. Not sure of the year but I'd say early to mid 2000s. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/panzersergeant/toybent_zps4e051b43.jpg View Quote Holy f'ing shit!!! Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Took 3 weeks just to get the frame. With 198000 miles on it had them replace the clutch, do a few other things while apart. All new brake lines etc. My only complaint, the rear springs are a bit mushy compared to the original TRD springs. Truck is good to go for another 10 Midwest winters. |

If it's documented that they checked it, should be on them. View Quote This I wouldn't take no for an answer. I had new rotors thrown on my Tundra for free after they checked and said everything was fine and I found a recall. I was out of the service date as well. People like to shit on guys for using the dealership but right here is where it might just save your ass. Documentation baby... |

I just noticed some bubble on my 4runner's rocker and poked it to see how soft it was. Finger went straight through.
Drive it til the wheels fall off.

They said they didn't detect any frame rust and that was it. I don't recall any talk of applying a sealer. |

My father in law had a beat to fuck taco with a ton of miles. He might've got two or three grand for it if he found the right sucker. Ended up with some rot in the frame, brought it into a dealer. They put it up on a lift and whacked the rusted spot with a hammer. *pow*, right through. I think they gave him like nine grand for the truck, and they let him take it home and strip everything off it he wanted. Radio, cap, tires, I think running boards... "We don't care, we're just going to crush it." It just had to get there under it's own power, so he turned up some dented to fuck rims with some tires worn to the bands, and there it went. So he went out and bought another taco in the same general age range but in far better shape, and dropped his tires, cap, etc on that one. Best resolution to a recall I've ever heard of! |

They only do (or did) buybacks on the pre 2001 Tacos.
Replacement frames were only on 2001-2004 models. gor here for more info |

A friend of ours had a Tacoma that had the frame rot. Toyota gave them $$$ and they wound up getting a Matrix.

Im a service advisor at I Toyota dealer, actually at work right now. Toyota will work with you. I have seen them help out customers farther out of warranty/warranty extension than that. Ive seen them pay for several thousands in cylinder head repairs for a vehicle that was out of powertrain warranty by about 30,000 miles.

I'll update the thread with the outcome of my conversation with them on Monday. If they let me take advantage of the rust warranty extension despite being a couple of months out I'll be buying a brand new taco asap (assuming this one can't be repaired, which I would guess will be the case it's looking bad). |
