Would you feel adequately armed in black bear territory with 17 rounds of 9mm good quality ammo from a pistol?
|
|
I have. I figured after 18 rounds, plus a new magazine; if it still gets me, it was my time.
|
|
10 mm FTW. BTW, if your 9 mm was a Class III shoulder fired piece, go for it.
|
|
Capital Hill ain't THAT rough. I'd feel safe there even with an M&P Shield.

Bears can come out of nowhere and move fast when they're pissed, and you might not get a chance to get off more than a (frontal) shot or two. I'd recommend a revolver in .44 Mag or larger - carried where you can get to it in a hurry. It takes some practice to master rapid, accurate fire with a magnum revolver, so plan on that too.

|
If you do take a 9mm into bear country, be sure and bob the hammer and file the front sight off so when the bear shoves that pea shooter up your ass, it doesn't hurt so much.

FUCK NO!
Bring the pistol but bring a fucking rifle too. Something chambered in .308, .30-06, 7.92x57, or larger. Bonus points if it's a semi auto. Quoted:
i'm going to bet those who voted yes have never seen a bear in person. even black bear can get to be huge. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VZ6SjOcyGP4/TjkqjI2XenI/AAAAAAAABjo/jHVsy4bFECo/s1600/Big+black+bear+1.jpg View Quote And notice what he's posing with in that photo people. It's a RIFLE, because when you absolutely positively need to kill something to death before it fucking EATS YOU, you bring a fucking rifle. |

not just "no way" but "NO MOTHERFUCKING WAY IN FUCKING HELL!!!!!!!"

I've hardly even BEEN in bear country let alone hunted them. I also love 9mm.
But fuck that shit.

17 rounds of 9x23mm? Sure.
9mm Luger.. I'll stay home, thanks. Disclaimer: I'm not from bear country, this is not intended as legal or medical advice. |

If you plan to take a 9mm into bear country season yourself first so at least you will taste good. My suggestion if you aren't going to buck up to 10mm tie a bell around your neck and bring bear spray
|
|
Well, I think YOU should carry a 9mm in bear country. Bears gotta eat!
|
|
I guess it depends on this: Are you feeling lucky?
Obviously a whole mag of 9mm will stop most bears, but in a real life situation you might not get a chance to calmly dump a mag into the bear while it runs at you. You might only get 2-3 quality shots in and if they don't stop the bear things could turn grisly in a hurry. |

I have seen a black bear and brown bear in person....F that 9mm..
44 mag shooting solid 300 grainers as a back up to something 300 win mag or bigger. People that hunt bears carrying only bow's are either crazy or a bad ass. Back several years ago when I was a reserve police officer in a town near the florida line we had a bear make it from a air force base about 35 miles away to the little town I was working in. The dispatchers started getting in calls about a bear up in a treeand my buddy hauled ass down there to make sure no one got hurt till a game warden got there. Sure as shit there was a smallish 200lb bear with a ear tag up a tree. Game warden popped him with a tranquilzer & the florida game & fish dept came and got him. Another story I just remembered a bear was struck and killed by a car about 6 miles from my house. News article http://www.andalusiastarnews.com/2009/11/02/driver-hits-265-lb-bear/ |

Ha, 9mm will have the effect of mosquitos on a bear. If you have to have a pistol, a 45-70 or .455 casul would be the way to go, or maybe the new S&W .500.

People hunt bears with bow and arrow all the time. So since a 9mm has more knockdown powah than an arrow......potato

Using stealth while bow hunting over bait is slightly different than trying to stop a pissed off charging bear with a 9mm pistol. Yes? |

If you have one charging at you this is head down you shoot him in the head bolts will Deflect of it.
You would have to hit him in the neck or in the spine and Server his spine. If you were not aware of your situation and you had one barreling down on you he 375 H&H wouldn't do s*** because you probably wouldn`get up in time. Let's just say it doesn't happen like it does in the movies. A pissed off bear with a lot of adrenaline even after being shot can f*** you up.. |

I lived in AK for years, I saw many bears, I felt ok with my P99 in the woods, then again I didn't worry much even unarmed, now if I were staying overnight, or fishing or hunting where I may be distracted from my surroundings, and/or creating tempting snacks for bears, then I'd prefer something heavier, but I never felt undergunned on a day hike. Only once did I have an interaction with a bear that needed shooting, didn't have the nine that day though.

Depends. Bear country where black bears don''t get much bigger than 350-400 LBS sure. Country with 400 LB + Black bear, Grizzly/Brown bear, or Polar bear are present, I want a rifle 30 cal and above.

i carry a fotay in bear country....glad I haven't had to use it!

Yeah, I do it all the time. Bears in AZ are scared of everything 99% of the time. A few years ago we had one near the Rim ripping scalps off and eating dogs, but that's nothing a mag full of Gold Dots can't fix.
|
|
17 rounds of 9x57? Sure. 17 rounds of 9x19? Hell no.

This. Oldest hunting photo trick in the book, and no one ever seems to notice. it was the first pic I stumbled upon and wasn't too far off from the truth even if that photo is faked. most of you seem to think black bear means the size of a large dog. MANY black bears in the 800-1100 pound range have been killed. in some areas the average weight is 126-550 pounds for males. wiki funny. because I remember a thread not too long ago about "ar15 vs glock 19 for home defense". and the overwhelming majority of arfcommers couldn't help but comment that "handguns suck and you should use a rifle". now when we start talking about a bear that can weigh 2, 3, 4 times what a human weighs, 9mm seems perfectly adequate. score one for GD I guess. |
|
The problem with 18 rnds is the time it takes to get them down range.
When surprised by a "beast", you need a round capable of eliminating the threat in as few a rounds as possible. Then there is the whole 9mm -v- 45 thing...and that's with respect to stopping a man. |
