It seems that the toasters of recent years are awfully slow. I would analyze them based on watts/slot. more = better.

It all depends how much you want to spend. You can get an electronic toaster from Amazon for $85. Great for reheating pizza.

A 4 slice toaster wastes more in storage space than it fixes in convenience by making 4 pieces of toast at a time.
Get a 2 slice regular toaster. Not the cheapest one out there of course, but dude it's a box with hot wires in the middle that burn bread.

I analyze this stuff, more than I should, before buying. The last one I bought was a Waring model CTT200. Had good reviews, the price was right and I'm satisfied with it. BUT, they're all made in China and they all us mostly the same parts.
There are people who restore old American made appliances, like toasters, and sell them on various sites. I have some old US made kitchen appliances and the difference between them and the Chinese shit is vast. If the people getting are into vintage stuff, nostalgia, antiques, old cars, anything like that, this would be a gift they would really appreciate. If they are techies, like the latest gadgets, they would probably think you're nuts. Personally, I like this kind of stuff.
