Courtesy of SCOTUS's Kelo ruling, no doubt.

Edited, last Monday, Mark Steyn was hosting for Rush Limbaugh and he invited liberals to call to defend ObamaCare.  One of them called in and Steyn made the point that state-run healthcare now made your lifestyle choices their business because it affects costs of treating you.  The caller said something incredible: that under eminent domain, the federal government can take control of your body if it sees the need.

Steyn just laughed, but it was just chilling the lengths liberals will go to justify their welfare state.

There's nothing funny about it; these cocksuckers think we're all property of the state.

You say that as if anyone should be opposed to that.

If it's for the greater good, then it's perfectly fine, right?

time to throw together a business plan for building a parking ramp to show that it is more than just a parking lot to you.

if it does anything it will show that you are loosing out on a business venture and might get you extra cash.

otherwise get ready to be bent over.

This smells of corruption ot high holy heaven.

Of course the big plan is to make a parking structure despite claims that they're going to leave it as flat parking.   Either that or they'll come up with another plan and some crony will get the old ladiy's waterfront property.

About the only thing I could see is if the city was in dire need of a multilevel parking lot and the old lady couldn't afford to upgrade that they go in as a partnership with her owning half and them running it.   That's about all I could come up with....but for them, to basically take over operation of her parking lot to be the city parking lot of the same type, they have acheived no service to the public, only theft.

Unbelievable,  I felt our country cracked when the supreme court upheld the seizure in the NE.   I laugh that the mall project there is a fricken unfinished ghost town.  May the pox be everlasting.

No. The city (claims, at least) it will operate the parking lot. Not the same thing as Kelo.

This is simply illogical local politics.

The city council can jump in the sound as far as I'm concerned but that lady is dumb.  She was offered 20 million for the parking lot at one point and turned it down.  Is she really attached to a parking lot that much?  She could have taken the money, moved to be a better location on the coast, built a mansion, and made a new parking lot if she wanted.

Why, the value will only go up. She's probably already set anyway so it's not a matter of money but principle for her.

The land is her's not the City of Seattle's. It's her right to hold on to it and pass it on to her family. If she doesn't want to sell then they can go pound sand.

The other thing you can do is let them take it and build their new parking lot. Then hire one of those predatory lawyers who goes around with a ruler and a plumb line and finds 87 ticky-tacky technical violations of the ADA ("your wheel stops are 1.87" too close to the walkway, and the slope is 3.87 degrees too steep"). Get some money out of the government that way.

Financing fail.

Use the property as collateral to take a sizable loan to build your mansion. Use the proceeds from the lot to pay back the note.

Now you have a valuable parking lot and a valuable mansion.

The part that I don't get is that she's 103 years old.. what does she think is going to happen to the lot as soon as she's gone? Whoever inherits it is going to cash out with a quickness.. after all, how long would you have to operate that lot to make $20mil in profit? They don't even run it themselves, it's subbed out to one of the parking management companies here in town, so there goes part of your current profits in overhead.

If she cashes out now, at least she'll have some control over where the money goes.

Seattle's pretty notorious for this type of behavior.

The city of Seattle has such strong ties to the University of Washington that they're happy to go out and do their dirty work.

I haven't done more than quickly glance at the article but I would be surprised if this didn't have to do with UW in one way or another.

I have some personal stories involving family friends who had to tap into their retirement and life savings to fight ED from the city. If you're willing to allocate millions of dollars to a defense fund you actually have a chance at keeping your property

What if it's worth forty million? First off, it's hers, not theirs. Fuck them. I loved the business owner who bitched about the lack of parking downtown. That must have been quite a shock when she learned that there is a lack or parking downtown. It's never happened anywhere else...

I don't understand the rationalization here. Usually, there is one, even if it's bribery. The story doesn't say if they want to build a multi-level facility on the lot, if they want to keep the money and use it to fund their other projects, or if they want to charge less for parking because it's expensive (that'll solve the problem real fast ). I hope she crucifies them in court.

It's incredible how naive they are.  It's like it never enters their thought pattern that if they make it ok for Obama to do it, it'll be ok for the next Bush to do it.

Yeah that is the part I don't get.  If it was her childhood home that she has lived in all her life, that I could understand.  But for a parking lot?  It's her decision what to do, I just think not taking a 20 million dollar deal for it is foolish.

Does anyone know how much the property is worth, or how much cash flow it generates? How about if that area is going to have rising property values? If not, I don't understand how anyone could say that she should just take the deal. It might just be a very bad deal. 20 million seems like a lot, but it wouldn't be if it's worth more, or if she thinks the value is about to skyrocket, or if she is living off of the income, or maybe she doesn't own enough equity for it to be worthwhile. She would sell it, if they offered her what it was worth to her.

Perhaps she wants the waterfront to stay as it is and not have a huge parking ramp there. I could see her wanting to keep it for that reason more logically than anyhpthing else.

Whether she is 53...103 or 153...doesn't matter. She was offered money for her privately owned property, which she declined to take. Her property...her choice. Anything else is theft. Same goes for a house, car or a vintage Chevy. Money isn't all that important to some people.

There is no privately owned (land) property in America. Belief that there is is a sham. Property "owners" are really just tenants who pay perpetual "rent" to the government for the privilege of having one less person over them who can evict them from "their" land. If it was truly private property then the government couldn't evict you and take it away just because you missed a rent payment.
