A Chicago alderwoman wants to charge a $25 licensing fee for bicycle owners and require them to take an hour-long safety class.

Pat Dowell's proposal could generate up to $10 million a year if 400,000 cyclists buy the license. Dowell thinks the city should implement it instead of a heightened tax on cable television that's been proposed by the mayor.

There is actually a bicycle registration fee here. I don't mind it really. Motorists can't (shouldn't) bitch about who owns the roads now.

And same thing with shoes in regards to sidewalks.  License them too.

Careful what you wish for, it just might backfire.

LOL

I do think we should have some kind of scooter/liquorcycle registration.  Mainly because of the huge theft problem with them.

Doesn't matter if you pay to share the road, anyone driving 20mph on a 45mph road is going to piss off everyone else and is putting their life in danger.  That applies to bicycles, tractors, and vehicles.

Roads existed long before vehicle taxes.  It was motor vehicle wear and tear on the roads that required taxation to repair the damage.

Sidewalks are for WALKING, hence the NAME.

I wonder how many FSAers in Chicago are riding around on stolen bikes right now...

I can tell you from multiple personal experiences in PG county, almost all the Amish that are riding bikes are on a stolen one, and the police don't give a fuuuuuuuuuck about your stolen property.

The city I reside actually had a law on the books from the 70's up until recently that all bicycles must be registered. Absolutely nobody followed it so they decided to make it optional.

Heavy animal-drawn wagons can wreck a road, too - plus the animals poop all over.  Someone has to pay to scoop the poop.

These 20 ton monsters were likely delivered by draft-animal power ...
