Have the machinist make you a display while exchanging part of the price tag on advertising for his threading service.

Machinist or bar stock or tube and a die, Brownells has the die as I recall, I suggest aluminum bar or tube for the ease of threading.

check out a local fastener store.
we have a place called automotive fasteners that you can get about any type of bolt. you probably will have some type of store like it in your area. |

Lots of hits on Google. http://www.truckspring.com/suspension-parts/hardware/steel-threaded-rod/1-2-inch/TH-12X28.aspx I've found a couple bolts like that, but they're all 2 feet+ long. Even cut in half, they would be pretty long. I might could make it work, but I was hoping for something 4-6" long. Softer steel would be best, in case I have to cut it. I've checked local hardware stores and machine shops. It's just not a common thread pattern that anyone keeps. I don't think a Dowel rod or PVC pipe would hold up very long with suppressors being mounted and unmounted on a regular basis. Working out an advertising deal with a local gunsmith is a good idea. I might see if he wants to thread a few rods in exchange for putting his name/contact info on the display. |

It sounds like more effort than it is worth. Also could lead to crossthreading/damage and wear on the suppressor threads.

I don't think two 1/4x28s can take the place of a 1/2x28 View Quote Sadly, they won't. The total area is half the area of the 1/2 inch bolt. Standard half inch bolts will either have 13 pitch (coarse) or 20 pitch (fine) threads. 28 pitch threads were conjured up for suppressors just to make life harder than necessary. 1/2-28 pitch threads are fortunately classified as extra fine, so that gives some hope for off the shelf hardware, but not from common sources. The best approach is to get someone to crank them out on a lathe, it'll take longer to work out a deal than do the work. |

It sounds like more effort than it is worth. Also could lead to crossthreading/damage and wear on the suppressor threads. View Quote I'm not going to be threaded suppressors directly on. I'm going to mount suppressor mounts (IE AAC 51T Mount, Silencerco Trifecta, Gemtech Quickmount, etc) onto it and then use it to demonstrate how the QD systems work. One of the most common questions we get are customers asking how they attach to each mount and the differences between each brand. This will let people compare them side by side. And it shouldn't be too much work to put together, if I can just find a source for a fake barrel, like a threaded rod or bolt. Already tried McMaster and Grainger with no luck. |
|
Your best bet is probably just to get some 1/2 cold rolled rod or some tubing with a 1/2 inch od and thread them yourself. Should look nicer too as you will only have the thread length you need.
|
|
We've kind of been through this before. The only good path is to buy some mild steel rod, cut it to length, buy the die linked above, and thread the rods yourself.
That fine thread seems to be unique to gun barrels, and isn't found elsewhere, from what I've seen. |
|
Ask someone in the gunsmithing forum to thread some old barrels or rod stock.
Found some, $4.20 each - http://us.misumi-ec.com/pdf/fa/2009/inch_p381.pdf These screws are hollow to accept a 1/4 inch diameter bolt, so they'll be dead easy to mount on a display board. Do searches for "leveling screws". |

I have a lathe, I can make you something...
You might contact a place like ADCO that shortens barrels, bet they have a ton of scrap barrel ends in the trash. IM me if you want |

Best I could find. It has threads on each end that you could cut off. Local to you too! Good luck.

Those welds are kinda View Quote It's not something I plan to leave sitting out all the time. Just a tool to bring out when a customer is unfamiliar with mount options. It could be cleaned up more (and could have been welded cleaner, this was stick welded), but I didn't want to invest a lot of time/effort into this project. It's just a quick display we threw together in about 30 minutes, and it will serve it's purpose just fine. |
