Reading the thread about the woman killed when she ht the front brakes on her bike, now I am wondering why is there front brakes on a motorcycle?

Once you know how to ride, the fronts are all you'll ever use...

Rear brakes will not stop you very quick. Front brakes are really all you need, once you learn to ride.

I hope this is not a serious question, but I fear that it is . . ..
|
|
Why don't you take the front brakes out of your car. Tell us what you think.

Haha, newb asked a question on arfcom, haha, so stupid.
But seriously, why? |

With any vehicle when you apply the brakes the weight transfers to the front. The front brake then becomes more effective and the rear brake less effective. If you look at brake systems, the fronts are always bigger because they do most of the braking.

Reading the thread about the woman killed when she ht the front brakes on her bike, now I am wondering why is there front brakes on a motorcycle? Wouldn't rear brakes be enough to stop a bike? I would guess that in over 20 years of riding I have only used the rear brake maybe a dozen times. Hell, I didn't have them on a few bikes. Front brake is how you stop. That being said, if you grab a BIG HANDFUL of front brake at speed.. well - it's going to shoot your ass into space. Was riding with two friends, one of which had JUST bought a 959. We suggested that he didn't want a liter bike but...you know how guys can be. We come up on a light on a model downhill street and it goes green yellow red in a BLINK. I stopped, one friend stops, other friend goes ass over tea kettle next to us. Bike must have gone end over end three times. He saw the light, grabbed the break like somebody was trying to steal it from him and off he went. He broke something in his arm, totaled the bike and ended our ride quite abruptly. Front brake, but front brake WISELY. |

Okay, the front brake does almost all the braking, like 70% For example in heavy urban traffic I rode with three fingers on the front brake. The main basic skills new riders lack is 1 not being able to get hard on the front brake to stop fast and 2 countersteering, to turn a motorcycle you actually push the handlebar, if I am entering a right hand turn I push the right handlebar forwards View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I rarely use my rear break for anything other than when I'm stopped on a hill. I know I should use both but meh, I've get big ol beefy front brakes on my Duc and they stop that thing in a hurry |

Why don't you take the front brakes out of your car. Tell us what you think. if he survives There's that. Ever notice you replace front pads about 2-3 times before the back wear out on a car? As others have said, the weight transfers forward. When I rode, years ago, I always used a touch of back brake, just in case the fronts decided to go. It seemed to be a tad more controllable also. |

The Fromt brakes stops the vehicle. The rear brake slows & controls the vehicle to a stop.

Why even have brakes, just use a deployment parachute instead

So the key is not to jam the front brakes hard, locking up the bike and throwing your ass over the bars? Pretty much. On cars, the front to rear balance is engineered for you so you don't have to think about it. On most motorcycles and bicycles, the brakes are independent and the rider must decide how much pressure to apply to each for a given situation. When I first got a motorcycle many years ago, I locked up the back brake once. The rear wheel that was spinning and had traction with the ground is comes to a screeching halt while you're still moving forward at 40mph. That leaves a thin layer of melted rubber under the contact patch of the rear wheel. The back end goes where ever the fuck it wants until you have enough sense to let off the pedal. |

Front brakes on a motorcycle provide 70% of your stopping power.
Go ahead and ride without them.......I'll keep mine. |
