By law, can the county fingerprint you for background check on CCW applications?

Does Prince William County?

The County Sheriffs Dept. fingerprinted my wife and I when we applied originally. That was five years ago and we just both renewed at $50 each. WOW!

Thanks, but it doesn't say whether they can require fingerprinting.

"The court shall charge a fee of $10.00 for the processing of an application or issuing of a permit. Local law enforcement agencies may charge a fee not to exceed $35.00 to cover the cost of conducting an investigation pursuant to this Code section. The State Police may charge a fee not to exceed $5.00 to cover the cost associated with processing the application. The total amount of the charges may not exceed $50.00, and payment may be made by any method accepted by the court."

I remember 5 years ago when I got my permit, they didn't require fingerprinting.

Depends on where you are.  I know that doesn't help but it's a piece of information.  5 years ago, Fairfax County required prints.  They don't anymore.

In VA fingerprinting seems to be discretionary. Example: Spotsylvania county wanted fingerprints.
Stafford county did not.

If you download the form, just look at item # 20.  Fingerprinting is only required if your local jurisdiction requires it.  Check with your Court Clerk's office.  They can tell you if you need fingerprints or not.  Some places do, and some places don't.  It all depends on the jusrisdiction.

Here in Virginia Beach, fingerprinting is not required.

Part of the $35.00 fee from the local police is for the fingerprinting, if they use it as part of your background check. Some do, some don't. Last I checked, Augusta County DOES.....
