Don't laugh. Serious question.
I have had a hankering for a crossbow for years. This is not a Darryl thing. I have a limited budget - does anyone know if there is one worth owning in the price range of $250? Awaiting lulz and hopefully some positive comments. |

Figure out which one Darrel is carrying in the Walking Dead... it's made it through 3 seasons...
- Clint |
|
What will you be using it for? Hunting? Just target shooting?
|
|
I'm using this one for the first time this season. I think it will be good to go, but the dot scope is a tad on the cheap side.
Barnett Jackal |
|
|
Barnett Recruit compound sells for $299.99 and comes with the cocking rope, red dot &3 bolts.
Pretty good bow and damn close to your price range. If you're near Monroe, Cabela's carries them. (I grew up downriver) |

I really don't need a crossbow, but if someone winds up recommending one in OPs price range worth a darn, I may be getting one anyway.

Much better trajectory and it's not bad to cock at all with the cocking ropes. It's not like a bow that you need to hold back. I like the Wicked Ridge models, but you're looking at $450 for an entry level. But they're made by TenPoint, which is a $1k+ crossbow. |

I remember seeing pictures of a supposed chinese 'SF' unit, one member on the team had a Horton Yukon SL.
Take that for what it is worth |
|
Bought a Horton Yukon XL in 06 for 219 at Bass Pro. I'm sure they cost way more now. It was a nice crossbow.
|
|
used possibly but hit sportsmansguide and go barnett best bang for the buck.
|
|
Horton is OUT of business, Ten Point bought their assets but are NOT supporting Horton products. Some small shops have left over parts but seem to be charging a premium and limiting items to one per person.
I'd stay away from Horton unless it's a killer deal, and by that I mean if it only lasted three seasons I wouldn't worry, kind of deal. |

Barnett Jackal has been good for the price, but scope didn't last.
|

A lot have recommended Barnett, and they are definitely in your price range, BUT, just make sure that you thoroughly inspect your crossbow before buying, especially with the Barnetts. I looked at 4 different Barnett bows before I bought my TenPoint, and all 4 had issues. The rail not being straight/true was probably the biggest, also found uneven limbs and a few other flaws as well

I have this one and have been happy with it. http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Barnett-Crossbows-Panzer-V-Crossbow-/70296741 |

Fuck. This makes me want to get a compound bow. Damnit damnit damnit.

Used Excalibur if you can find one within budget. Don't buy new cheap shit OP.

I forgot what sheared, but, he sent it back, they covered it. Second shot, broke again. For 1000.00 just to look cool... uh, no. I'm also curious how the state game laws would come in to the play. even with the bow upper, it is still a legal rifle. Texas does not allow a rifle during bow season. TRG |

I see a couple of people have the Barnett Panzer V. What the difference between it and the Recruit?

Well this thread is a pisser I have a Horton HD150 which has been a very good unit I guess I have to buy something else since it looks like there are no parts around. It sure would be nice to find a spare set of cables and a string.

I have a 2012 Horton Havoc that I absolutely love. Supposedly, the Havocs are very solid, but if anything other than strings/cables go bad, I'm screwed. |

Just opened the box. Have to put it together but seems pretty freaking sweet so far!

I'd skip the red dot and get a calibrated crossbow scope... regular crosshairs 20 yards, next horizontal line 30 yards, then 40, etc.
|

I have a jackal. Second season with it and for the price it's been great. I'm gonna get a darton serpent next. Pay close attention to what mechanicals it will shoot and you'll be happy

If you shoot the cat with that thing, you'll never forgive yourself.

Q to those of you with crossbow experience: does it make more sense to work with a set of sights, a red dot, or a scope with an arrow drop reticle?
