I say we call off the dogs and send very polite e-mails letting them know how we feel, but continue to keep them in the fold.
Maybe we can change their minds.
Boycotts and nasty e-mails might not be the best way. They are in fact, one of us.
I sent him a response and if anyone wants to see it, let me know.
Here is the e-mail from Steve Hornady:

"Eric I would appreciate it if you would let your customers know that TAP is
merely a marketing package for LE. The stuff in the box for TAP is the same
stuff in our "Civilian" package. Same Stuff. Different Box. Period. Keeps LE
happy and the politicians off their backs.
Thanks,
Steve Hornady"

Like I posted in the other thread:

I am pretty sure this is a TAX thing.

I seem to remember that they have to pay less or no tax on ammunition manufactured for 'LE only' use.

And I think that if they knowingly sell to somebody that doesnt resale to LEOs they could possibly be hit with a tax violation.

As long as they sell the same ammunition in a 'civilian' version that is exactly the same it is no big deal, if they were to start selling 'LE-only' ammunition that had no civilian version I might get upset.

Maybe the good folks at Hornady would put a group purchase price together...sell you the real thing..through one of their dealers ..at a good price discount ..by selling in bulk in plain vanilla wrappers

Can we buy just the box? Do they have volume discounts available for 'em?

Tap handgun ammo is XTP ammo.  Tap rifle ammo is 40 grain ballistic, tip same a civilian ammo.  I've got factory 40gr ballistic tip nickle plated brass ammo thats probably better than the TAP.

You want low flash then try loading your own with Vihtavuori.

Its a sales gimick for LEO.

Shok

I supsected as much, but it's cool that we got confirmation.  So it's just like the Remington 700 PSS (police model) is pretty much the same rifle as the VSS (varminter)?  All the crap about "LE Only" is a marketing angle so that cops with low self-esteem feel special and superior and want to buy more.  If you've ever looked through a "Gall's" catalog, you can see why this type of marketing makes perfect sense.

Nice reply email already sent.  I too got the impression that this kind of blindsided old Steve.  But, it forced him to take a second look at the practice anyhow.

Now, just exactly which civilian ammo is the same as the TAP ammo.  I'm not real familiar with the lines so it would be nice for someone to definitively tell us.

This situation really shows the the power of AR15.com

When the membership of this site really comes together on an issue, people sit up and take notice.  POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Except that it isn't the same.  Same bullets, yes, but no the same load.  TAP is loaded 150-200 fps faster in several loads.

Just out of curiousity, I looked at Hornady's velocity tables.  They list the 55gr V-Max at 3240fps out of a 24" barrel, and 55gr TAP at 2970fps out of a 16" barrel.  That's 270fps difference...wouldnt the 8 inches worth of barrel account for that?

I dont know either way, never shot either round.  Just curious.

I do remember reading on Remingtons site that you lose about 30fps for every inch under what their test length was.
