And what type would you guys recommend?

My truck is the work truck package with the 17inch steel wheels, I painted them black to match the trim.

Okay...

Let's revisit this thread..

My truck came wih 265/70/R17's.

I went ahead and ordered 285/70R17 Nitto Grapplers that came in yesterday at my local Walmart.

I brought the truck in today to get them installed and the guy comes and gets me and says there may be a problem with tires.

He stated that they fit VERY tight.. The tire is right up againt the rear of yhe wheel well. He advised that it might be unsafe.

The wheel will turn but it's very yight... they were concerned with tight turns and hitting bumps.

They have wrangler at in 265/70/R17...

Should I just get the wranglers and send the Nittos back?

I really dont know what to do here.

Remember, I want the biggest tire I can get, WITHOUT a lift or mod of any kind.

285/75/R16 BFG All and Mud Terrains fit perfectly on all my Z71's. Never rubbed either. You can crank the torsion bars a bit to gain some extra clearence. All Ya need is a wrench.

Not on the newer 1500's

245's were stock on my '02 2500HD. 265's were no problem. Front end torsion bars were up for snowplow, equivalent of about 2" in front. went to 285's, had to trim some plastic, and I can still rub in front if I try.

285's won't quite fit without "adjustments".

OP get a Rough Country 2 inch leveling kit. It will fix it. http://www.roughcountry.com/gm-leveling-lift-kit-1302-4.html 65 bucks

People do it all the time.

OP, different brands have different profiles so some will work while others will not.

I saw 305's on a 02 suburban and they did not rub, although they were a street tread.

Mine are the Kevlar Wrangler MTR's. I would not want to be 1/8" bigger. Another 2" of lift above and beyond what the torsion bar did would be nice.

285/70r17 will fit with no lift/ leveling kit. Leveling kit would make it look a lot better, those don't have torsion bar se up so you would have to buy spacers. 305/70r17 is roughly the same height as the 285 but a lot wider overall, which I wouldn't recommend on factory wheels.

I don't think you can make a statement like that. 285's still required trimming on my 2500HD after leveling. If you were able to do that, there are other variables at play that need to be addressed before saying what fits.

just get a leveling kit and you will be fine. It isn't hard to put on and I wouldn't' call it a lift kit by any means.

I put a 2.5 " lift/level kit from Rough Country on my 2012....It was only a couple hundred bucks...The truck came with 18's...I dropped down to 17"s but stayed with 265....My next set will be 285's

The 2" leveling kit is the way to go, op. It is cheap and looks great. Check out the silverado sierra forum for more info.

Most common is 285-70-17
Nitto, toyo and BFG MUDs come in a 285-75-17 that is about a inch taller than the standard 70 series.

Good tall tire that is not too wide. On a factory rim mine are tucked in the fender and don't throw mud or rocks down the side of my truck
