So here I am 43 year's old, fat, lazy and out of shape. I wasn't always this way, but life has a way of sneaking up on you. A couple of weeks ago my wife asked if we wanted to try a weight lose program. I was like "Sure, whatever Honey..." Well last week we started Nutrisystem.. I will admit, I was not really into it, but when the wife says we are doing it... Well, here I am.
Started out at 237 pounds and 36% body fat. That's over 75 POUNDS of fat I am carrying around..... That hit a mark I didn't want to acknowledge. Weighed in this morning, 228 pounds, 34% body fat. Still to fat, but very happy to see the #'s going down. The meals are pretty easy and the hardest part is the mental game wanting to eat the wrong foods. Still have a long ways to go, but am actually excited to be doing this now.... Pic taken a couple of weeks before starting. Will post some more throughout the transition... 1 Month Pic More of a family Pic, but this is after losing 30 pounds. Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

Don't forget exercise. It's at least as important as diet. View Quote Yep. Awesome work btw. Keep it up. I dropped 30lbs to a healthy weight recently, and it was one of the best things I've ever done. Did it in prep for a move to Colorado, and haven't regretted it. Got me out and active without wanting to die on the mountains. |

Realizing that I have forgotten what healthy, portion controlled eating is, was one of the main reasons we chose the system that we did. Now that the eating is getting controlled, time to get some help in the gym... |

I don't know if it's on your diet but Oscar Meyer Turkey hot dogs and a protein shake in the morning stave off the hunger pretty good. (Sans bun)
Egg and a sliced turkey hot dog are pretty good also. |

I put in 60 hours last week and am facing an 80 hour week starting tomorrow.
Is there an option for fat and NOT lazy? |
|
Atkins works.
Reduced calorie works. more exercise works. all three together works really, really well. the fact you are doing this with your wife and making a lifestyle change means this will probably work for you long run. good luck and good job. |

Great work so far, but the number one problem with diet and exercise "programs" is they are unsustainable, because frankly they SUCK to follow.
Start figuring out a lifestyle change. There's likely something very physical you like to do that you don't do enough of. Running, biking, hiking, racquetball, weightlifting, crossfit, boxing... something. Look at "lifestyle" diets versus "programs." Diets like those after the paleo style are incredibly popular and have good results for a large number of people. It also has the plus side of letting you eat steak and bacon. Bottom line is, you're off to a great start, and you should finish out the nutrisystem program, but to accelerate and keep those gains you need to figure out how you're going to sustain it. FWIW, things like lifting and running become second nature once you learn to enjoy them. I feel like shit if I miss a single workout a day or a single 5k a weekend. |

Congrats and keep it up...
The past few years Ive been getting fatter and lazier...started feeling worse and worse... January of this year I was ~260, through watching what i eat and some intense exercise Ive got my weight down to 230, and my waist has gone from 42 to 38. Still have a ways to go to get to my target weight (175-180), but its a start. Keep in mind, that being fit and healthy is not a "program" you can get in and than get off when you are at the place you want. It is a LIFESTYLE For me, this pretty much means never again eating many of the foods I love... |

Keep moving. Walk, run, bike, anything. July 2012 I was 287. Today I'm 192. I'll be 48 in November. No more BP meds, no more cholesterol meds. I feel better then I did at 38. I've been on a "Maintenance" program since April and lost another 13 pounds. So much for that.
Good Luck. Life is too short.. Ed |

Regular hiking, biking, or swimming will help a lot. But it sounds like you are doing well with the diet.

OP- this thread on Mark's Daily Apple changed my life. I went from 210, 24% body fat to 177, 7% body fat in 14 months. I surf, climb, have new friends and score pie. If this doesn't get you motivated, I don't know what will. Paleo/Primal Before and After Pictures (500 pages of 'em)

You may not believe it now, but those foods you love--likely processed shit, won't be appealing once you start consuming a diet of REAL food. Other than the occasional craving I don't eat crap food anymore, and I even have room in my daily calories for a couple beers or even some brownies. Once I got my food scale and started eating a balanced diet I find it's hard to eat enough food, rarely do I go over, and even then I don't sweat it because I look at it as a weekly calorie goal vs a daily one. I actually took a break from trying to lose and focus on fitness, mostly cardio. I've built that up a good level and now I'm about to start weighing everything again to lose more, I've still got a long way to go before I hit my goal. Myfitnesspal is a great tool, but you have to be completely honest and log everything, I see people in the forums all the time who are having trouble and they don't log everything or just "quick add" calories. ETA: exercise is important, but ounces are lost in the gym, pounds are lost in the kitchen. It takes a calorie deficit of 3500 to lose a pound. That is easy to do by cutting back portions, and hard to do in the gym. I do fairly intense cardio on the bike, and I'll burn a little less than 700cals an hour. I would run, but I've got bad knees from past injuries so I'm waiting until I lose some more weight to start on that. |

25 lbs lost in the last 2 months. Good for me. After several years of surgeries and other health issues after not being sick for over 40 plus years. I felt like whale. Couldn't move like I used to and I honestly got to where I did not even care if I did anything. My grand-daughter was over at one of her friends house and watched a man collapse and die from a massive heart attack. Her friend was devastated by the loss of her father who was an overweight man. With tears in her eyes, my grand-daughter begged me to lose weight so I would not die to. Not much you can say to that. I knew it was time to get busy. I decided to get back to my old lifestyle of being outdoors and I remembered I actually enjoy eating fruits and nuts. Along with reasonable portions, the weight will come off with some mild exercise. I got about 25 more lbs to go and its hard sometimes. But I will not make my grand-daughter cry again while I am alive. |

He mentions wife and we get a picture of a topless MAN??? This is bullshit.
Good work OP. keep it up. I decided I was getting serious today about getting back in shape. |

Look into the 5x5 stronglifts program or the 5 3 1 program too.
And good luck!

Unless you want to stay heavy you need to change your lifestyle not just temporary diet. Exercise and healthy eating is key.

You will lose your craving for junk foods in a little bit. After eating good foods, you will not like the taste of the junk you used to like and actually crave the good stuff instead. If I don't get a good sized portion of fruit for a day or so. My body actually feels dehydrated and I have to drink extra water. I was told this bit of wisdom from a health nutrition specialist that works at several large hospitals. Most diets work until you stop dieting. Making a few simple life changes will make you lose weight and keep it off forever. |

Great job OP.
My wife and I started the same thing about a month ago. I am 6'2" and was hitting the scales at 260-262 but I didn't look like a big tubby because I power lifted for years in the military and was broad shouldered and just thick. I was starting to get a gut though. We aren't dieting really, just making better food choices, cut out sodas and candy. We walk every morning at a really fast pace and when the wife is done I will jog a couple more laps. Yesterday we walked/jogged 3.5 miles and today I fast walked 4.2 miles. The scales this morning said 249. I am 46 years old, have bad hips (right one probably needs replaced soon) and a bad back (2 disks severely herniated) and am able to do this, all be it at my own pace and it probably aint pretty but I am doing it. The VA doc told me I need to keep mobile some how and drop a few pounds. Come on arfcom, get up and exercise in some fashion. |

A buddy of mine lost a ton of weight on Nutrisystem. The issue is once you are off the food, you have to really watch what you eat. Sadly, after a lifetime of being fat and then getting thin on Nutrisystem, he put a lot of the weight back on when he had to make his own food choices.
|
|
Good on you and on your wife.
Stick with it--you'll be glad you did. |
|
Good job, make sure you provide updates.
I made the same decision last year and chose a different route, I'm only a little lighter but am no longer fat. |
|

Best of luck to ya OP.
I have never had a weight problem (about 152 lbs), I am over 50 and maybe have put on 4 or 5 pounds since High school. My secret, I push my ass almost every day, running, weights, you name it. I just can't sit still, most of my family are thin, some not so much. You need to add some kind of exercise, if you don't the weight will come back to ya. Now one of my sons use to be about 260 lbs,, didn't get it from me. He just decided one day enough of this and dropped down to just under 200 lbs. He does the same things I do, he pushes his ass. |
