Like many of you, I grew up as a big NASA fan and enjoyed the earlier days of space exploration. Stories like this reminds me of the old "They don't build 'em like they used to" quip.

From CNN

The Voyager 1 probe has become the first man-made object to enter interstellar space, NASA announced today.

Scientists report they have strong evidence that the unmanned spacecraft has crossed the magnetic boundary separating our solar system's sun, planets and solar wind from the rest of the galaxy. The announcement comes more than 36 years after the unmanned spacecraft lifted off on a journey that gave humans close-up views of Jupiter and Saturn before heading toward deep space.

I remember the launch.
That was back when Americans gave a shit and were proud to do things like this. Now FSA is eating all the NASA money

We need some kind of space colony, like Elysium.

...but not somewhere where the rich people go... somewhere to send all the FSA.

If we're sending the FSA, why make a colony? All we need is an airlock.

Don't mind him. I don't usually single people out or pick on them on the forum, but he's one of the weirdest and most trollish people I've seen on the forum. Just about every single thing he posts makes me go . I can't tell if it's intentional and he's just a troll or if he's just off in the head.

The irony of this post, being made possible by a whole bunch of spin-off technology. We've gotten a larger return on investment from the space program than any other program in the history of mankind.

Those guys were truly old school.   Came up with gravitational slingshot solutions using slide rules . . .    The guy that did all the calcs was basically a grad student who was assigned some "shit work" (to him).   He did such an outstanding job that they made him the project leader.    Just more proof that if you work hard and know your shit, it will pay off (at least I think I still believe this).

Very exciting!  I can't wait to see what finds it brings.  Earlier this year I took an astronomy class as an elective and we discussed this.  I love the glory days of NASA too and marveled at them in my youth.  My cousin was lucky enough to intern there for a summer and said it was all he thought it would be.

Nope still happens today. Biggest difference is that college students forget that a degree is like paying a toll. You still have to drive the car after your toll is paid.

Pray the trail gets real cold before it's found by some planet willing to spend a few thousand years to track down its source.  Maybe by then we'll be able to catch and recover Voyager!

Voyager 1 carries a "Golden Record", a 12 inch phonograph made of copper, and plated with gold, that contains a variety of images and sounds meant to portray the diversity of life on Earth. Among the sounds are a selection of natural Earth sounds, waves, birds, whales, etc, greetings in 59 languages, and a selection music from our various cultures and eras - Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Chuck Berry, and many others. Among the music on the record is a song called "Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground" by an old Blues man by the name of Blind Willie Johnson.

Willie wasn't born blind, he lost his sight at the age of 7 when his stepmother threw lye in his face after his father beat her for cheating on him. He remained poor most of his life. In 1945 his house burned to the ground, and with no where else to go, he slept on a wet bed in the ruins of his burned out home. He later contracted malarial fever and was refused treatment at the hospital because he was either blind or black. Or both. He died September 18, 1945.

Almost 68 years later, his music has left our solar system. How bad ass is that?

We used to build marvelous machines that took us to impossible places.  What the fuck happened?  Fucking FSA........

We are detecting 23 watts of transmitting power from the spacecraft..

I think 25 watts is the max for CB radios legally.

Imagine that when you were a kid fucking around with your CB.. " dude, I talked to a trucker way out on I-95 last night!"

"Bitch please! Do you even CB? I talk to mother fucking interstellar space! Bubba was ronere as fuck and wouldn't STFU! Piffft.. I-95.. Try half a light year bitch!"
