Kid came banging on the door.  "Dad!  Come out here!!!"

Standard CopperMoutfRattleMoc or a juvenile yellow rat snake?  I am not sure.

I know this is not a serious thread, but in VA, round eyes mean you're safe...    Cats eyes are bad...

Should I unwrap it from the boy before running amok with the machete?  Or just be really, really precise with the hacking, and careful with the flamethrower afterward?

The snake and husky thread says if you start at the tail you can unwrap it, then go to town on the snake

while i'm not one of the guys on this forum who is in touch with his feminine side when it comes to snakes

might want to have a talk with your kid about picking up strange snakes unless he is extremely knowledgable on species.  i'd hate for it to actually be a "CopperMoutfRattleMoc" one of these days...

Can't you see that the boy is soaking wet?  Obviously, it's a water moccasin.

While the kid aint no herpetologist, he does know what the three types of venomous snakes that live around here look like.  Process of elimination and all that.  My kids are taught to think critically.

He has dragged me outside when he found a copperhead on occasion.

Not with the shape of the head.
Nor with its DNA.

While I didn't exactly take the time to do a full work up, I did notice the longitudinal yellow lines that are pretty indicative.  And the bright yellow face.

I want to say a really big Garter or Ribbon snake but I haven't seen either one in years.....I am leaning towards Garter. Their color patterns can varry wildly but those long black bands are almost always there.

Nice python, cute kid, he doesn't look worried.  Dad made sure we could distinguish shakes also, I remember doing the routine at 8 years old. He killed copperheads and rattlesnakes at work and brought the home to teach us.

I would scream like a girl, shake the boy loose from the snake, haul the kid in and then slam the door.

In a few hours the screaming would stop.  I got stamina.

Looks like a garter snake, likely harmless. However please teach your son not to pick up snakes of unknown kind. Could be a life threatening mistake.

I know you are all just bustin' my balls, but I came home from work a couple days ago to discover a 4' ish CottonMouth that my older son and his friends killed... in the refrigerator, skinned, right next to the eggs.  They were going to eat it... apparently still are, as it is there right now...

Who the hell drags home a moccasin to eat?   My sons are savages.

Yellow Rat. We usually get them lighter and more yellow with darker stripes as they get older but some have the faint squares when young that are common on other rat snakes.

ETA lo but OP already knew that lol

Looks like a Garter Snake... but I am buy no means a SNAKE ID amateur, let alone expert

Doesn't look like most of the KNOWN poisonous varieties from what I can see.. a pic of the head would help.. would let it go away from the house

I did a Google search for "snakes of Georgia" found The Eastern Garter snake.  If you do an image search there are a lot of pattern variations.

This one looks kind of close.
