Are they still issued still? or allowed to be used? I was looking on the DOD website and they had a picture of a major with what appears to be a 20rd magazine

If you bring you own you can use it.

I never saw any officially, probably can buy your own if you want, especially if you're a major.

Yes, some guys had 20rd PMAGs they used in turrets in 1151s and MAXXPROs.

Personal mags for turret gunners (fit up there better), line grunts (easier to use prone), DMs, and finally fobbits because its lighter.

There have been fellows here in GD from MARSOC that purchased their own and used them in Iraq.

Operators Warehouse (T.A.G.s) in Jacksonville NC used to carry them, so there must have been a market for them.

The original 20 rd magazine with the metallic followers were a very decent magazine.  Before the advent of Magpul n"on-tilt" followers for the 30 rounders, I'd be tempted to keep a few handy were I to deploy again.

Kept a 20 rounder I found in Iraq with a new follower. I kept it in the lower leg pocket. Fits perfect.

Not an O-4, nor was I issued any 20rd mags.  I did bring a few Pmag 20s and I really liked them.  Fit in a back pocket well for the around the FOB mag and they were a bit easier to maneuver in and out of vehicles with than the 30rd mags.

Just me though...

I know when my brother went to Iraq with 3ID in 2003, he was issued about 20 of those 20 rounders.

He said they got them out of the armory.

I was real surprised they were still around.

On the other hand, I knew a guy who was a Major that worked in Intelligence, that took his own in a bandoleer, and was told by a ranking officer, that he couldn't use them as they weren't regulation.

I saw a few in use. I didn't really know anything about ARs at the time so I didn't think much about it.

He's a 13er, don't even bother trying to understand him.

ETA:  Never saw any 20's while I was down range but I'm sure it's a possibility, just like bringing your own 30 round PMags.

We still have a bunch for range use.  Makes it easier to say "the big mag has 20 rounds, and the two little ones have 10 rounds"

Some aviators use them. Hard to get in or out of some aircraft with the rifle containing a 30rd mag mounted.

When I jumped, I always used a 20 round mag it would fit in my rifle, inside a M-1950 weapons case; a 30 round magazine wouldn't.
