Sunset at Montmajour

Pretty cool to find after more than a century.

That's very cool.  I've always wondered how many undiscovered or mis-attributed works are out there.

I saw some of his work at an Impressionist exhibit in Birmingham several years ago.

Saw a Van Gogh exhibit back in the late 60's.  His paintings are almost unbelievable.  They are so alive.

love his style...  and his life story makes his work that much more impressive to me.

Yep.  I've been fortunate enough to visit the Van Gogh museum several times.  The prints really don't do the paintings justice.

Neat! the van gogh museum's pretty good too. kind of bare bones, but there's minimal security around the paintings, so you can get up close and really appreciate them. Hell you could touch them before getting kicked out if you're a dick.

Naughty naughty.

I know. Remember, I'm the guy with the art degree.

But I found myself alone one morning in a room full of Van Goghs.
I shouldn't have been smoking in there either.
I stood in front of this painting:

I just couldn't resist the irony.

Plus I was pissed at Captain Pitard.
Not just for his goofy name but because he was fucking with me and my crew.

It was a pretty hallowed moment.
Dawn was breaking through the skylights and there I was alone in a room with twenty priceless paintings.

I chiefed a 20 man crew loading in the scenic for the gala opening of the traveling Van Gogh "Masterpiece" exhibit at the National Gallery in D.C.

They ran us through the wringer over ID and security so one morning when I went in at 0500 and I found the door unlocked I went for it.
I knew that the lines were going to be around the block for the show so I figured I'd stroll down to the gallery and take a peek at the paintings.
Unguarded, no cams, no alarms, no nothing. Just me and twenty priceless Van Goghs in a room all alone.

As we have learned post 9/11, "security" for the most part, is an illusion.

Am I in before someone called van Gogh an overplayed cliche?

Impressionist art is my favorite era. Seeing them in person, they produce a positive visceral reaction in me that I don't experience with any other art but a WELL written book.

I'm no art expert. But I know what I like.

ETA: Awesome news, OP! Hadn't seen this story.

Everything is influenced by everything that preceded it.

Post Impressionism is a rejection of the constraints of Impressionism.

"Duh" on your first point and your second is very debatable. In many ways Post-Impressionists wanted to return to formal structures.

Either way, Post-Impressionism grew from Impressionism and the plein air movement in general.

I've always said it there had been anti depressants when he was alive he'd have ended up being a missionary minister as he'd planned.

I completely disagree.

Either way, Post-Impressionism grew from Impressionism and the plein air movement in general.

The Post Impressionists "grew from" Impressionism, like the United States grew from Monarchy.   It was reactionary.
