At 1am last night, both my and my wife's phone made a super loud shriek and it scared the crap out of us.
It was an Amber Alert for an area over 150 miles away. WTF? What doesn't make sense is the alert message appears on the screen but as you touch the phone, the message disappears is not stored on the phone anywhere. You don't get a chance to read or write down the information. Worthless intervention into my peace and quiet. |
|
I got the exact same thing, never has done that before. I didn't know what the hell was going on.
|
|
|
i got one at 4 in the AM for a domestic dispute where the dad left with the kids
7 fucking hours before the alert was sent out. i'm turning them off. I don't really want to but its clear they are not used in a responsible manner |
|
I promptly turned it off afterwards, but after reading up, even if turned off, by law, the alert will override the phone setting.
What is so stupid is that the message disappears as soon as you touch the phone. Makes no sense. |

I've never received one so I'm not 100% sure, but other notifications work that way. Put your finger on the top of the home screen and swipe down. |

Yeah, both my iphone and BB went off last night.
First fucking thing this morning, that shit got disabled. |
|
I'm not defending the Amber alert system. But it's often several hours after the child goes missing that the alert is issued. So it's entirely possible that the child is 150 miles away.
I remember one that was issued for Tennessee and the child was found in Georgia by someone who had received the Amber alert. |

My Android Phone allows me to turn off all emergency notifications, except PRESIDENTIAL ONES. So I believe if nukes are inbound, I'll get a notification of it a few minutes before TEOTWAWKI. There are some steps I can take with a rooted phone to disable even those notifications. |
|
Yeah, the way they implemented the system is a fucking nightmare. Not sure who to blame more - Apple for making it so obnoxious with no control whatsoever over how it works aside from turning it completely off, or the cellular carrier for sending it out 3 times in 10 minutes... I turned it the fuck off.
|
|
I turned all that stuff off. If they start to override it I'll just leave my phone off at night.

It hit my wife's phone while I was in GD last night.
At least my two year old Blackberry don't be worryin bout no chillens. |

Yeah turn that Amber Alert shit off. I mean, its just some fucking kid that's been kidnapped or taken without permission. I'm sure that fucking kid deserved it and isn't living in pure terror before being possibly raped and murdered. Yeah what the fuck, it ain't my fucking kid. I don't want some fucking squealing noise from my precious fucking iPhone interrupting me watching porn, gaming, drinking or sleeping. I gots more fucking important things to do than be looking out for some fucking kid!!11!!!!
You fuckers are amazing. |

How many has the highway sign-based system saved? I think it's a good thing, but I also think you should have the option of disabling it, or at least turning off the "OMG IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD" screeching notification and have it just pop up in the notification bar. |
|
Got it at about 1am. I did not know what the hell it was. But It was a white suv and a licence plate number. I think.
|
|
Got one too last night for PA with vehicle description and tag number. I think its a good thing... You never know, but I'll be looking for a white expedition...
|
|
I got the Amber Alert Warning the other day also, twice. Scared the crap out of me too. First time I had ever heard it.

Over 90 percent of those recoveries have occurred since October 2002 when President Bush called for the appointment of an AMBER Alert Coordinator at the first-ever White House Conference on Missing, Exploited and Runaway Children. First time I got one on my iPhone was at 4am for an amber alert in ElPaso (on the other side of Texas). Pissed me off because it woke up me, my wife and my son who sleeps in the next room over. And I had a presentation to give for work at 9am and didn't really ever get back to sleep. So yeah, I turned it off.
I think the Amber Alert system is a good one, but the usage does it a disservice. A mass alert on cellphones in the middle of the night is only going to piss people off. And honestly - the only time I ever think about them is when I'm out driving around and I see an amber alert on the traffic notification signs. iPhone users take note - in addition to amber alerts, there are also emergency alerts, which as I understand it are EAS alerts from the government. Then there are Presidential alerts - which can't be turned off. Can'y wait to see one of those go out.

Me and a buddy of mine (he has a droid) received the amber alert while we were at the strip club making it rain. High point is about 90 miles from me.

all the phones went off in my house, and i was the only one to hear it.
Disabled it on my phone. Sucks that you can't disable the presidental alert. |

We get Amber alerts for Philly (5 hours away) all the time, but not for Cleveland (2 hours away)
Notification by state instead of distance is possible (use the area code, or even the zip code of the phone owner) but the cementheads can't figure that out. |

Or is it perhaps 656 recovered children that were lost, taken by a divorced parent, or a runaway that were not facing death? How does anyone know that a recovered child would have been killed? It is quite likely that a certain number may have been killed but it is more likely that this statistic is overstated just to make the program seem mo better. |

I would bet the vast amount of them are generated by Parents with custody issues.
What percentage are actual Chester kidnappings? |

Why do you not care about stolen children?
I've gotten those a few times. Those fuckin alerts will bout damn near give you a heart attack from the damn screech. |

When did this Amber Alert and Presidential Alert bullshit start? It comes in the OS of new smartphones now?
I'm still running Apple OS 5.1.1 and glad I didn't upgrade. Still have google maps and apparently no amber alert thing that I can find. Stupid shit and mandatory features is why I don't like upgrading. |

It scared the shit out of me too! I thought it was either the smoke alarm, baby monitor, zombie detector, or TEOTWAWKI!

Presidential Alerts...Barry will use it.
He wantd to touch all he can while in the WH. I wonder how many AA's were used to get a person that had nothing to do with a kid. Just cause the gov wanted them. |

We've got about 15 people with IPhones in my office including myself (company provided otherwise it would be a Samsung). The other day when an Amber Alert went off it freaked us all out. I turned that shit off.

I leave mine on. I've only got one alert in the four or five years I've had an iPhone.
