It's nothing but a scam. Everything you note is correct. I'll dig up some links with interesting facts--including the fact the owner of the sham organization posted here we are all "fucking cockbreaths" for questioning him.

He has supporters because many gun owners are not actually involved enough to know what is going on in the political world. When you don't see any movement toward repealing the various laws, and someone comes along claiming the NRA is eager to "compromise" your rights away, and this guy is a "hard core no-compromise" tough guy--it sounds good. It's a crock, but it sounds good. They send money, then never pay attention enough to realize their money does absolutely nothing but enrich Dudley Brown. 
Edit: And as mentioned above, GOA is exactly the same thing, but with different players. |

I suppose the GOA doesn't do much either, but they do at least get involved in the debates, and their debate performance has been good.
