What brand? Chrome lined or unlined?

Those are clues that would help.

General guess is that an M4 barrel would be chambered in 5.56, but as long as it isn't a target barrel, you should be ok with either.

chrome molly is the type of steel it is made from.

Chrome lined has an actual chrome lining in the chamber and bore.

I wasn't aware of any .223 barrels that were chrome lined, but I don't know everything.[:D]

I thought shooting shooting 5.56 out of a .223 chamber was a no-no?

Actually, the neck dia is a touch bigger in the 5.56 vs the SAMMI 223 Rem as well.

HR, if the barrel is not chrome-lined, any smith who has the proper chambering/throating reamers can ream it out very easily and simply for you. If it is chrome-lined it is probably 5.56 and you are stuck with it anyway, since reaming a chamber that has already been hard chromed is not practical.

Please note that you don't want or need that long a throat in a chrome-moly or stainless barrel for best accuracy. I recommend the so-called "Wylde" chamber reamer - it is basically the NATO 5.56 chamber and neck with a shorter leade that will seat a Sierra 80 Match King at 2.475", touching the lands. Compass Lake (Frank White's) reamer is similar with a slightly shorter throat. These two reamers are favored for best accuracy in ARs.

Of course it can be rechambered to 5.56. Any gunsmith should be able to do this for under $50.
