Considering this a first "deer rifle" for my son. How's the recoil ??

I had a Ruger carbine when I was a kid.
That long barrel does wonderous things to a .44 mag! IMHO its one of the best close range brush guns around. (At least in Fla) |

I have a Marlin and a Browning. They are accurate enough for deer to 100-150. Around here shots are usually close and they kill better than their paper ballistics would have you think. They have more recoil than you would think, too. I was surprised by it. My 94 Winchester 30-30 kicks far less.
I would lean toward the 243 or 260 for youngsters. My 357 Marlin kills deer fine even though people bad talk it. Think about it. It's a 158 doing 1900. The 30-30 is a 150 doing 2300. No real difference from a deer's standpiont. It kicks zero. |

I was curious about the .44, Didn't think the recoil would be to bad. I am leaning towards the Model seven remington in .260 Thanks for the input. Mike |

I've got a Ruger Deerfield Carbine in .44 Mag and it is a great little shooter. Recoil is very manageable as compared to the Marlin 1894P I used to have. Now that was a kicker! My Ruger is very accurate and very pleasant to shoot. Check one out.

I want a .44 lever gun really bad! I have a .45ACP Silencer. Thread that lever gun and shoot subsonic .44 Spl. and it'll be whisper quiet.... very cool!
I imagine the recoil is quite controllable in rifle format. |

.243, .257, .260.....all good choices.
i can testify to the killing power of the .243....used it for several large animals - Savage 110. as long as your son is familiar with the rifle and has had sufficient trigger time, it would make a great deer/antelope gun. 100gr bullets are a must, partitions are a good choice. light, light recoil(not that it's important to me as i'm now 6'4'' and 200lbs, but new hunters seem to appreciate the lighter recoil), and a good solid accurate round. |

I still have the Ruger carbine I used when I was ten. It still kicks harder than my 270, probably because of the metal butplate versus a padded one. My wife is uncomfortable shooting it, so I was thinking of getting her a .243 for deer, which I could also use for coyote. I know two women who hunt with a .243 and they say it doesn't kick bad.
I don't reload so the .243 is common enough that I could find ammo at a corner store somewhere if I needed any. Where in the state do you hunt? |

I usually hunt in Vermont, I have some land and a camp there. But with my son ready to hunt I've been checking out a few places close to home. Brunswick. found a place in Durham and one in Bowdoinham.
I considered the .243 but have heard the .260 is a little lighter shooting. I'm still suprised the .44mag from a rifle has as much felt recoil as apparently it does. Go figure. Mike |

I used to be in the Durham Rod & Gun Club. I thought I could swing it since I worked in Freeport but it was too far from home to keep showing up for the meetings and events they sponsered.

A .243s kick will feel equivalent to .308. Myself and my son both have .243s for deer. I wish I had gotten .308s, then we could shoot military surplus for fun/practice.
The .44 will kick a LOT less than a .243 IMHO. |
