I only eat them if I don't have a choice and I don't think I've ever had a good one. For some reason they still seem to be popular. It must only be those who've never had a decent apple who buy them.

Is you get them fresh enough the can be crisp and tasty. They have good shelf stability so the stores like to keep them.

They taste like pulp to me. Honeycrisp or a nice Jonathan, please.

I'm all about the Granny Smith personally. Too much stuff in our life is sweet these days. I like a little sour.

Growing up in Eastern Washington, I get sad when i see what passes for an apple on my local grocery stands.

I am not a fan of Delicious apples (Red or Golden) but they are popular with a lot of folks.
I prefer a tart apple with a finer grain. McIntosh are my favorite. |

Tier One: Fuji, Gala, and Honeycrisp.
Tier Two: Cortlands, Macintosh, GrannySmith Tier Three: Everything else Tier Four: Red Delicious. RD tends to be mealy, skin is too soft, and they are completely unpredictable in flavor |

I used to think I hated apples when I was younger. I thought they were all those bruised chucks of cork wood they called red delicious. |

If you can get them fresh they are quite good. If not, they suck pulpy balls. I don't even try to buy them from a supermarket.

It boggles my mind as well. With so many good apples out there I don't get why people would buy them

Lots of great choices out there. Red Delicious is way down the list IMO. They are a commercial apple that holds up ok in cold storage.
Hard to beat a Gravenstein picked fresh from the tree, warmed by the sun. |

Honeycrisp = Best = Too pricey.
Braeburn. Have a honeycrisp tree in the back yard. Not a vigorous tree. Sissy tree. |

Red Delicious apples are worthless. Useful only for feeding to animals, IMO.
For eating raw, I prefer Gala, Fuji, or Granny Smith if I want something tart. |

The key though on all apples, and fruit in general, is freshness. I brought back 30-40 lbs (a couple of full boxes - I didn't weigh them accurately) of fresh Galas from Eastern WA a weeks or so ago and the family (with help from friends) has almost eaten through all of them already. |

I have some trees. They are remarkably disease resistant. and easy to grow. they ship well and are the best "keepers" in cold storage. A marketers wonder apple. there you go.

None of the apples in stores are at prime flavor or texture, some handle the: picked pre-ripe/cold storage/delivery, process better than others. |

When I was very young our neighbors had 6 large apple trees and we lived in those tree as soon as the apple buds got a round shape. Sour green apples for me or no apples at all. Granny smith is what I eat most of the time but love something a little more sour and crunchy.

Rediscovered apples when a friend let me have a bite of the Fuji she was snacking on and I thought to myself... apples aren't as bad as I remember... until I tried another Red Delicious. Fuji, Gala and Honeycrisps are my faves... road apples > red delicious apples |
