Most houses pre-date the internet, and most people prefer to be wireless these days anyways

Nope.  Would rather have a standard outlet and plug into a power strip.

But hey, whatever floats 'yer boat.

I think that's more of for charging and powering phones and whatnot.

It looks like a charging port to me.

Put one in my kitchen where we usually charge our phones. Extremely convenient.

I was recently in a student lounge at a local university, and all the outlets in the room were those. Smart...

Lol, I guess that's covered.

I'm planning on getting a few of those myself.  Very handy.

I've got a couple in my kitchen that are two USB ports and two outlets. I agree completely, they are cool as hell.

I just don't see any advantage, and in fact you give up versatility.

USB devices don't have a cord hanging from them, like a vacuum cleaner or TV.  So you already need a separate "support device" to plug them in- the cord.  It is absolutely ZERO hassle to use the appropriate adapter on the end of that separate cord, and still have the versatile does-everything AC outlet in your wall instead.

I foresee power strips being plugged into the lower outlet for lots of folks who choose to do this...

Inefficient, put a switch on it so it isn't wasting power when not in use and it would be far more interesting in the right place.

I can charge 2 usb devices for the lost standard power outlet. And still plug in something. Vs 2 devices taking up an entire outlet or having a power strip.

In my bedroom I have two switches, one on each side of the headboard which control the two recessed cans above the bed.  The switches are wired as 3 ways so either one of us can turn the lights on and off.  I switched out the single gang boxes to two gang boxes and installed these outlets next to the switches.  Now we can leave our tablets on the night stand and charge them.

There are hundreds of these out there, in every shape and size, that will charge two in one outlet and not interfere with the second outlet.

Now that makes more sense- you gain a capability instead of trading a capability.  I like!

That would drive me absolutely nuts.... ESPECIALLY if I paid someone to do it and it turned out like that.  There is something to be said about attention to detail.  If he/she leaves this as a final product for his/her customer, who knows where else they didn't pay attention to detail or cut corners or just do general sloppy work.  An outlet is screwed in at the top & bottom so you must ask yourself why is it crooked??  Especially if it wasn't crooked before!!

These are not standard in new houses and are installed only when requested in remodels.

All the people poo pooing them don't have to worry. If you don't want them or think they're stupid, you don't need to put them in your house. Obviously a lot of people do because outlet manufacturers make them.
