around here stray dogs get disappeared.
"for the children" literally. In any other context this notion of dealing with packs of strays would seem inhumane and subject one to ridicule. But when viewed in the light of this incident it makes sense doesn't it? |

Pretty frightening.
Being a country boy it is hard to imagine a dog pack that large. We have occasional strays but they usually end up being adopted or shot because they bother farm animals or pets. Several neighbors have sheep and stray dogs usually don't live very long around them. Funny country story regarding a young stray that an elderly neighbor couple adopted earlier this year. They found a gangly black and white pup half starved out in one of their meadows. Took it home and fed it ... BOOM! ... they are now the proud owners of what appears to be a great dane mix that is mostly great dane . 
We live on a one lane gravel road and their newest family member takes great joy in chasing cars. Sooooo ... They recruited several of us to go by in trucks hiding in the back with wiffle bats ... SMACK! Now Pepper doesn't even come off the porch for trucks ... but still goes after cars.

We had a pack of 5 chasing people very aggressively at the Apt complex I provide security at last year. I dispatched 2 and the rest left the area and not returned. This was after Animal control confessed they were too scared to try and capture them and receving permission from local police.

We had a new family move in and I was heading to the trailhead on my dirt bike (nice fresh knobbies) when their dag came screaming down the hill and tried to stop to chase me and overshot resulting in me running it over, the thing took off yelping. That dag doesn't even leave the porch when I go by now.

Snapping and snarling as they moved along. Poor things, it wasn't their fault. They were cute little puppies adopted on a whim by college punks and abandoned at the end of the school year. No one loves dogs more than I do but that whole pack should have been captured and humanely put down. |

I used to day that because I'd learned that in the Air Force when I had to serve as a Disaster Preparedness augmentee. Part of what we had to do was learn post-nuclear attack recovery and one of the items covered was the THREAT of feral dogs to humans when the dogs formed into packs. The solution the manual gave was to shoot any and all dogs running loose, to eliminate the likelihood of the dogs forming packs, and to do it soon before the dogs had become fully feral. If the dogs became totally feral they would become dangerous to humans and would also not be as likely to come near humans unless on the attack. When the dogs still retained their domestic traits they would likely come to humans and be easier targets for those trying to exterminate them. This incident is a good example of why that was put into that manual. And I understand it was based on lessons learned in North Africa when US troops were attacked by packs of feral dogs. |
