Any idea what this plant is? It's growing in a neglected little flower bed on the side of my house. Plant's about 12" high and this beautiful little blossom is about the size of a quarter.

I'm sticking with my guess of Verbena. It comes in dozens of different colors and multi colors, sizes and shapes. To say "Verbena" is akin to identifying a photo of an AR-15 as a "rifle".

They are pretty hardy and will grow totally neglected and abused and still look good to spite you. Feed it a bit and it should really take off. Humming birds and butterfly's love them. |

That particular mixed color bloom is the wild and native lantana that grows all over Texas. You see them in open fields and vacant lots in urban areas. I have viewed them from the East Texas Piney woods out to Big Bend National Park out West. Extremely drought tolerant and grows best in full sunlight. Some grow to 5 feet tall and 3 feet around. The nursery business has bred dozens of new colors and even miniatures.

I should have recognized it, but the color of the bloom threw me. Almost all the lantana I've ever seen has pure yellow / gold blooms. I wonder if the plant being mostly shaded could cause the white / pink / purpleish bloom?

Around here that color Lantana is called 'Ham & Eggs'.

Yep. Lantana. We have 3 of them in front of our house. Every fall I cut them all the way down to the ground. Right now they are standing about 3.5' tall. Almost impossible to kill too.
