What kind of groupings should I get at 25, 100, 250 yards with my gun?

it varies gun to gun, caliber to caliber, cartridge to cartridge.  What gun do you have?

According to the media, you should be able to get dime sized groups at 1000 yards with any .223 weapon.

yeah, it very much depends on the round/rifle.  My SAR-1 gets groups of about 6 inches at 50 yards (though I haven't really tried that hard to get tight groups with it), and my 14.5" ar-15, with SA ammo, will get 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards if I'm really careful.  With wolf ammo I'll get 6-8" groups.

My "gun" doesn't shoot past 1 foot.

My rifles however shoot about 2 MOA @ 100 yards on a good day from the bench.

But that's just me.

I thought I heard CNN reporting that the .223 actually corrects for shooter error.  [;D]

As you noticed, sgtar gave his grouping in MOA (minutes of angle), that's probably the best way to express acuracy as it isn't dependent on range.  I shoot 2 MOA with my Rem. scoped 700ADL but only about 10 MOA with my SKS.  Guns can vary quite a bit.  A good AR should give you 1-2 MOA, you on the other may shoot 1/2 MOA or DOA's (Degrees of Angle (really bad)).  1 MOA = 1" @ 100 Yds.  1 MOA = 2" @ 200 Yds.  2 MOA = 2" @ 100 Yds.  and so on.  Karl.

I just shot my father-in-law's .243 at 300 meters with an 8 power scope and a 15 mph crosswind.  My best group was 1.5 inches using Federal ammo.  Probably a fluke but I would think that if you're a decent shot, a 3 inch grouping at 300 meters wouldn't be out of the question.  But again, this begs the question as to your ability, the conditions, etc.

How this relates to an AR-15, I'm not sure exactly.  I was an expert marksman with the M-16 in the Army and we had to use the 300 meter targets (with open sites) as part of it, so I would think that with a scope, it wouldn't be out of the question.

Hope this helps.
