The other day I was thinking of what gun I would use if somebody ever broke into my house looking for trouble. I was thinking maybe my 12 gauge, or maybe I'd even grab my AR. When it comes down to it, I'd probably grab whatever is handy.

what gun/s would you use?

I wouldn't use a gun at all. I would produce my rapier.

I would use my Mark 19, belt-fed grenade launcher.

Just kidding - Mossberg 590, 12 gauge, with double 00 buck shot, keeps my family safe.

Colt 1903 Hammerless simply because I always have it handy. Next to my bed is a S&W 686, on the other side is a Sig P232. In the living room I keep a 1911 .45 with a spare magazine. Under the bathroom sink I have a Hi-Power with extra standard capacity magazine. I have several rifles and shotguns that are suitable, my M1A is always kept loaded, but I don't think a longarm is very good for use inside a house where I might need the use of at least one hand.

god forbid this would ever happen, but since you asked...well, if it's an actual breakin, assuming i'm in bed, then i'd reach for the mossberg 590. it's got a flashlight on it.

daylight hours - even more unlikely - sling the ar and grab the 1911. why? because if it's daylight, i'd have a chance to talk the intruder / assailant down while five-oh arrives, and it's easier to mark a target with a pistol for longer periods of time than with a rifle. the ar would just be there to, uh, bolster my side of the argument.

but remember kids, you're asking for trouble if you shoot anyone outside your house. most likely you'll do time. a travesty of justice, if you ask me. but if he's inside your house, no problem, pull that trigger. there's no castle more sacred than one's home after all. i got this straight from a criminal defense lawyer.

and lastly, of course, if all hell breaks loose and the enemy has breached the hull, then simply activate the self-destruct sequence and abandon ship...

In building materials penetration test the 9mm penetrated farther than the .223 round by almost 30%. Don't kill your neighbors with that Glock. [;)]

I was thinking of making an AR carbine that shoots .45 with one of those short tactical entry stocks. I'd definately mount a flashlight on the barrel with a pressure switch.

Whatever you have available at the time.

Personally, I am never more than arm's length from a sidearm. I would recommend that you have an effective (.38SPL or 9mm minimum) handgun that you train with regularly. If you plan to leave your home with it, be sure to get your concealed carry permit.

Of course, as you will note from a number of posts, a quality 12 gauge (e.g., Mossberg 590 or Remington 870) that again you train with regularly, is probably your most effective home defense weapon. I would not recommend an AR15 for in-home defense due to overpenetration and the risk of shooting a neighbor through your/his walls. Naturally, if you live in a more rural area, the AR15 would probably make alot more sense.

Good luck and practice, practice, practice with whatever you decide on.

I agree, a 12 gauge will do. In my case that will be my Benelli M1S90 Tactical.

Glock 19 W/meps and several feeding devices with 15/17 little nasties inside 'em at night.

It depends on what species has broken into my house looking for trouble.

For flies, I use a flyswatter or piece of newspaper.

For ants, it's chemical warfare time.

Stray dogs get soaked with a garden hose.

For two-legged varmints, my present home defense weapons are a baseball bat, a flashlight, and an M1 Garand rifle.

I wouldn't use an AR-15 because the lower receivers are not replaceable in this state.

If LEO are not showing in [b]1 sec[/b], then I'll have to use my newly acquired Benelli M3 and/or G23.
