...this is his first punch the clock job. He figured it out that each day he works he has to work 1.5 hours to pay his taxes.
He was so pissed. Welcome to the real world. |
|
Did you explain that his contributions are for the glory of the people's revolution and the much needed support of his proletariat comrades?

My wife had had jobs at school that were exempt from federal taxes, and when she got her first real paycheck she was PISSED about how much was taken.
Its a tough pill to swallow. |

Good lesson to learn early in life IMO. Gets rid of silly socialist tendencies in a hurry.

I remember that moment in my life very clearly. It was almost 40 years ago.
My first formal job was boxing groceries at a small store. But it was in a neighborhood where there was no FSA. No food stamps, ever. My pay was $2.25/hour IIRC, plus an occasional tip. One time some people gave me $5 for putting several bags in the trunk of their Rolls-Royce. |
|
Now tell him that his marginal tax rate increases the harder he works.

Did you include state income tax, wheel tax, property tax, gas tax, sales tax, etc... I'm pretty sure i'd suck start a .38 if I added all of that up and saw how much I actually paid each year. |
|
I remember talking w/ my Dad when I got my first taxed job. He showed me his paycheck and all I remember was he had more taken out for taxes than I made before taxes.
ETA: I feel the same as your kid and I've been a taxed employee for many years. |

Serious related question:
Would you turn him in if you found out he was hiding income from the Feds? |

You should have taken him down to a Jackson Hewitt office a couple of weeks ago, or better yet, go sit in the parking lot at the local WIC office.

Yep, welcome aboard sonny.
Now have some further fun, figure out what you paid when you started to work, and what you pay now. Show that to him and let him see where he's headed. It'll never end...unless people get pissed enough. |

Bama, this is directed at you or your son, as I can tell from your posts on here that you and yours are good people.
That being said, I wonder how much further down the slope we can go before "this is bullshit!" becomes "this is bullshit and I'm gonna get some friends and kick the shit outta the first FSA-looking person I see!". As much as I might appreciate the outcome of America v FSA in the streets, I damn sure don't want it to happen. |

Somebody's got to pay for it. You might want to tell him that the number of hours will work per day to pay his taxes is only going to increase as he makes more money and moves into higher tax brackets. Progressive taxation and all that. |

Explain to him that his actual tax burden is much, much higher. Sales taxes, excise taxes, property taxes (if he's ever a homeowner), etc. And it's about to get even worse when we feel the real effect of Obamacare. Then show him how much of the public debt is his share (and not the per person amount, the per taxpayer amount), which represents the spending that isn't being paid for, but for which he will pay one way or another in the course of his lifetime. He'll be ready and eager to join the revolution. |
