You’ll never believe this. I met someone who actually believes that organ donation, upon death, should be mandatory for everyone. I mean I’m all for donating my organs when I’m dead but MANDITORY BY THE GOVERNMENT! Talk about the final insult.

What then, should the remaining body be ground up for animal feed? I understand that donating organs can save lives but shouldn’t it still be a choice? Don’t we have that right?

Please people I’d like your opinion.

If you can believe it this person usualy believes strongly in human rights!

- No knock warrants.
- The right to own and bear arms.
- Freedom of religion
- Etc.

Do you know what morticians do with the contents of a dead persons chest? They suck it out with a HUGE ass needle (like an inch in diameter) and vacuum. They suck everything out and throw it.

I've already donated my stuff, as I won't need it and I'd rather someone else use it than have it thrown away.

I think the issue is that organ donation should be an OPT OUT program, instead of an OPT IN.

That way, your organs are donated UNLESS you say you don't want them to. If you really care about it, for religious reasons or other - then it's not a huge hassle to say that you don't want it.

The big tragedy is that tons of people don't care what happens to their organs, but they cannot be used for transplants, because they didn't opt in to th eorgan donation ahead of time.

I'm all in favor of an opt out program, but "mandatory" with no opting out would be totally wrong.

This sounds somewhat like Maryland Gov. candidate Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's idea for a requirement for high school graduation:

Compulsory Volunteerism

I mean, are you actually volunteering if you're forced to? Sounds a lot more like slavery than volunteerism.

Ya! I agree with the OPT OUT idea.

Truth is most potential organ's that could be used to save lives by transplantation are from younger accident victims. The organs may as well be used for some good, too many people die every day because of lack of organs.

When you are dead you really do not have any rights anyway, during autopsy the organs are cut sliced and diced, the organs are not placed back in the same place, for example the brain is usually placed in the chest cavity and the empty cranium is filled with other material like garbage bags. And after the taxidermists are finished with you at the local funeral home you are nothing but an artists rendition of your former self. So who cares what they do with your organs, if they can save lives. People need to get over this religious myth of going to the "next world" fully intact.

Yeah I agree, the opt out idea is a good one. When someone dies I believe the body belongs to the relatives. Problem is that most people shudder at the idea of “desecrating” a body. Truth is; it’s going to be “desecrated” anyways. Be it worms or a scalpel. One saves lives the other doesn’t. But people should always be given a choice because the body does belong (property of) to the relatives. And it’s still a free country (LOL.)

Many states already have "implied consent" laws with regard to organ donations. California will take your corneas. I think maybe Texas will too.

In theory, I tend to agree with DKprof. Could assume that everyone wishes to donate unless otherwise explicity stated. Yes, there are problems associated with this approach, but I think that they are outweighed by the benefits.

I guess that your associate will have difficulty convincing others that mandatory donation is a good idea.

With the current situation in mind, I'll encourage everyone to opt in.

Opt out is good? How about this then. When you die, all of your assets automatically go to the state, unless you opt out by making a will.

Excellent point! Why should we have to “opt out”. Should ‘not donating’ your organs be like trying to get removed from a mailing list. First you have to send a letter saying that you'd like to get removed. Then hope someone reads it. Then hope someone does something about it. Lets not forget we'd be relying on the Govt. to file our "opt out." I'm sure in their infinite efficiency it would be lost or conveniently disregarded.

Then again the Canadian govt. has done such a swell job with mandatory gun registration (LOL)

O-my-god. LIBERAL IDEA: MANDITORY ORGAN REGISTRATION!

Maybe Opting out isn't the answer.
