Military terminology. Anti-gunners decifer it as "assault rifle" because it sounds deadly and it works well to support their agenda. AR actually stands for Armalite Rifle.

someone taking a rifle and assaulting something with it.
Honestly I'm sure it was thought up because these are not a battle rifle, but larger than a sub-machine-gun, being lighter and faster firing would allow soldiers to better assault (run) something. |

OK The term "Assault Rifle" or Sturmgewher is appropriate for a selective fire rifle with a large magazine capacity firing an intermediate rifle cartridge.
Use of the term "Assault Rifle" to refer to semi auto AR's stems from Josh Sugarmans INTENTIONAL coining of the usage to confuse non gun people of the dangers of semi-auto firearms. It is a media term, intended to convince people that semi auto rifles are machine-guns ergo banned.

IIRC (it has been years and years since I read it - Ballantines "Infantry Weapons"), Hitler had no idea the STG-44 even existed until he was begged for more of them by field commanders on the eastern front. They had until then been designated MP-44, as a way of circumventing his earlier disapproval of the assault rifle concept.

Thread needs to differentiate between assault rifle and assault weapon. I believe the rifle was in regards to storm rifle that may have been translated to assault rifle. Assault weapon is media made up, pretty much every gun in the world is referred to as an assault weapon.

The term has been in common marketing use since the early 1980s at least
The newer one is "tactical", notice how the news is reporting that fuckhead potential shooter in Florida as having a "tactical" .22. This will continue for years. You young guys will get to explain that "tactical" was OUR term to noobs over and over and over again in 2050 The next one? EBR, MSR, fuzzy bunny kisses... doesn't matter what term you use, it will be used against you |

Color me naive, but isn't there an army person who is part of a squad who is an "assaulter?" I thought I remember watching Lary Vickers on one of his TV shows saying something along the lines that he was a Delta Assaulter...if so, wouldn't the rifle an assaulter uses be known as an assault rifle? Quick Google search and I found that there is an Army Special Forces Assaulter School.

Knives, billy clubs, brass knuckles, baseball bats, and anything else you put in your hands to attack someone could be classified as an assault weapon. Martial arts experts can even have their bare hands be registered as deadly weapons. Just thought I would throw a few twigs on the fire.
