Ultima IV was probably the greated CRPG of all time, but some of his later stuff was kinda sketchy.

We'll see.

I was wondering what happened to the Ultima series after Ultima Online...

Once upon a time, long, long ago.  I used to play darts with a bunch of Richards pre game friends (I am not sure, but think he was part of the dart group.  They had been players/builders of spook house.  Lot's of fun stories, but the ones of the freak who tried to finish the game by breaking into Richards house in Austin was one of the best (there were a couple of stories about that guy).

I can safely say that I was surprised when I realized the majority of the dart group were chl holders, and I would not be surprised if some of them (including Richard) were members here.

The merge of EA and Origins is what happend, huge law suite and the rights of ultima to garriet were halved. EA isn't doing anything with the rights now other than letting them collect dust, it's time for EA to give the rights back

I'm an Ultima fan, and I'm tempted to contribute but haven't done so yet.

Ultima 8 and 9 were rather disappointing...

I'd just like to throw a "Fuck EA" in here, for good measure. Turning gold into crap since forever.

ETA:
GUILT PLEDGE ============================= Thank Lord British and prove your virtue with a $10 donation. If you ever pirated an Ultima game or used an exploit to grief other players in Ultima Online, here’s your chance to repent! For your $10 donation you will receive a clear conscience and Lord British's undying gratitude.

Pure win.. I did both. Ten bucks it is, and well played, sir.

Funny I just finished the Black Gate... first Ultima experience. Gonna try to play through IV and V (Good Old Games) also. Gotta say I was more into Wizardry and it's ilk back in the day.

Was a big fan of Ultima 7... Even with its 2d graphics and dated gaming it pulls you in... Been a long time we have seen games with so much detail

VII was the last decent Ultima experience. Elderscrolls seemed to fill the genre pretty well. I would love to see a decent Ultima  story come back. $0.02

Daaaaaaaaam , you old bastard . Ultima always had the best game covers . I remember when they put out U8 on Chrismas and it had a huge firey pentagram on the front. A bunch of people got butthurt

I can remember in Ultima III or IV, entering attack mode in Lord British's castle and then running like hell to the ship and doing naval bombardment on him for hours trying to kill him - and of course the infamous Ultima Online assassination of Lord British.

Should have known the fan incident would eventually be public knowledge, here is a quote from Richard's wiki.

Burglar attack

In 1997 the house was broken into by a deranged fan. Garriott held him off with an Uzi, firing a warning shot while waiting for police to arrive.

version I heard he was on the phone with the police, and they told him to fire the warning shot.  They probable crapped their pants when they heard the burst over 911.

I ganked a guide in EQ that forgot to go invincible and got a suspension. Not nearly as epic as killing British, but got me a bit of press at the time in the EQ world.

100% Garriots own stuff. EA has nothin to do with it this time. Thats why it may be good.. They are rebooting (through Bioware) Quest FOR the Avatar..its a mobile based game, tablet, droid...its a POS. This game should be awesome

Richard Garriott is a billionaire, he doesn't need AE to fund an endeavor. He's been to space for god's sake, just for the hell of it.

His house.

If I had to bet, that is the old house not the new house.  I knew a few people who worked on the new house (the house on lake Travis).  Even the electricians had to sign full non-disclosure statements.  About the only hints we heard (and these were from the outside) was that it was intended to have a bat cave exit to the lake - so who knows, it might actually have an escape submarine.

fwiw, Greg built a "submersible" for Richard for one of the charity parties.  He had a Titanic party (the party was on the boat), and during the party they sunk it.

Then why isn't he risking his own money on this endeavor instead of asking would-be players to fund it for him?

Just another Kickstarter scam. Fuck that shit.

From what i understand its because the game is being founded 100% of players imputs and wants. Its not like Bioware or EA churning out a Mega game..This ones alot more INDIE

Yep, has a really interesting online system..

Yea TR was a huge cluster fuck..The game was re-fashioned 4 times before released.. The kickstart is the only way Garriot and a few guys can do it hands off from a big company.. Everyone laughed at him when he was putting games in ziplock bags and selling them, i think he may get the last laugh again

How many Kickstarter projects have been scams, exactly?

The goal is *always* to play with the house's money.
