Just running rough numbers to try and figure a ballpark SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) on how much ammo everyone is buying/trying to buy lately.

The US population in 2010 was 308 million

Now to trim off the young and the old.... there are 194 million between the age of 18 a 64 (yes I'm rounding a bit)

About 51% are women, so for simplicity's sake I will exclude women from this SWAG (sorry to the chicks out there that stockpile ammo), so we're at 95 million

This is where it gets tricky.  The numbers say about 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 people own a gun (that's for all 308 million, our group of 95 million is probably higher), however many do not buy more than a few extra boxes of ammo.  To qualify for this SWAG, I'm looking at people that buy 1,000+ rounds to keep on hand.  Some buy a lot more, some buy less. I'm going to say 1 in 10 of our qualifying demographic have bought/ are buying 1,000 rounds during this last panic.  So that's 10% of 95 million which is 9.5 million, x 1,000 rounds is 9.5 BILLION rounds of ammunition.  That's not counting what's already on hand, and I'm probably being way too conservative.  The number could easily be double that when taking surplus and .22LR in to the mix.

DHS's 1.6 Billion over the next 5 or 6 years doesn't come close to what we're buying.

Stay calm, and keep buying ammo.

My ammo reserve went up by 10 times since sandy hook. been stockpiling surplus incase CT passed some anti-online sales legislation, which would kill my ability to get surplus 7.63x54r and 9mm Makarov.

Won't say exactly what i had before or after as you can multiply and figure it out. To be honest, I wish I had 10x what I have now. Feel empty handed just thinking about it.

I cannot find 7.63 x 54R anywhere!  It's like that caliber never even existed!

But when the surplus shipments do arrive, millions and millions of rounds sell in just minutes.

I've been seeing 7.62x54R around here.

In the last 2-3 weeks I've seen it in more than a few shops in a somewhat reasonable quantity.

If you have been a long time user you would see this as a blip and nothing more. I have acquired about 2,000 rounds since the panic just normal acquisitions. Shot about the same and sold about 3,000 of odd stuff I owned ,to capitalize on the panic..

Your number is low on gun owners. The panic did cause a lot of 2 box a year fudds to stock up. They all think a 10-22 and a brick of ammo is all they need long term.

+1. I've been buying or reloading every since Obama started stinking up the Oval Office because I knew something would happen sooner or later he'd try to take advantage of.

Yup.  God only knows how much everyone is sitting on right now.  Probably a hundred to hundreds of billions of rounds.

10k isn't even panic buying in my opinion. Its 2k of every round I shoot regularly really.

It bumped my stock pile by probably 20-25% depending on the caliber. Majority of it, besides the 7.62x39 was ordered pre-panic, right after SH.

My only round I'm short on is 308... Just can't get it.

I had over 5k of 9mm / 45 and 556 pre- panic... What's the point of owning a gun if you don't own ammo for it too?

My whole thing on this panic... We all preach it.. Be prepared. We are just seeing how many people aren't.

I can't tell you the number of people at my office who have bought ARs in the past 2 months. I'm building one for a guy later this week. He just got his lower. It will be the third one I've put together in a month for someone else.

I figure if I shoot 200-400 rounds per week, I should have a 6 month stock pile. I learned in 06-07 period when 556 was 50+ cents a round. Stock pile and avoid the major price swings. All my 556 has been purchased at under 30 cents a round.

I went to BPS world HQ tonight and they didn't have squat on the shelves.  Some 20 round boxes of 556 going for 11 bucks each.  A few of the less popular hunting rounds, and some shotgun shells was all there was to be had.  I've just pretty much stopped shooting until this BS stops.

My reloading area is huge, I will say that.

My ammo area is spread out, but all grouped up would be about a 4 foot by 4 foot area, 8 foot tall. About a pallet. Probably 70-80k if you include 22lr.

I've had everything I would ever need for a long time. Last weekend at the gun show though I did pick up two boxes of those C.O.P. rounds in .357. Wanted to try them out in my 2 1/2 inch S&W revolvers. Never had any solid copper handgun rounds.

I started buying more than I shot back in about Feb. last year. I layed in a decent amount, for me, but now wish I'd bought 5x of everything. When the prices started climbing I sat out. Haven't bought anything but a few boxes of .40 since Nov. I really didn't see the panic being as bad as this.

150 million gun owners buying 100 rounds of ammo each over a 3 month span is already 15 billion.  My guess is that estimate is very low.  I bet we are more like 45-50 billion.

Hell I went to a corporate sporting clays tournament and we shot over 24,000 shells in 8 hours a couple weekends ago.

I have a friend who's been going to several of the local Academys every Mon., Wed., Fri. for the past couple of months. All in the quest to get one box of .223 at each store. He's gotten maybe a a couple hundred rounds doing that. Lots of time and gas expended. He did it again yesterday and they'd raised the price to a little over $10 / box of the AE stuff. He declined to pay that much. Said it was under $9 last week.

But the best thing is that he bought a Sig 556 last October, bought a couple thousand rounds of the LC 855, still trying to buy ammo, bought an Aimpoint PRO... And he's never fired that rifle. And yes, it's his only AR.

Former Marine. We've invited him many times to a private range and he always has something else to do.

Kinda strange, but I suspect that's where a lot of the ammo is going. People who just want to admire it for some reason, not actually shoot the stuff up.
