Anyone know if this was from a costume designers imagination or is this a real tunic? I would like to have one exactly like it to wear when riding my motorcycle.

That's basically what the British call a Field Jacket. They are still available, but you may have to work a bit to track down a more WWII era styling.

Filson makes similarly styled jackets, but you will be paying a chunk for it.

It's a British WW1 tunic, possibly Aussie but definitely WW1

It's not British, least of all because he's supposed to be a French Foreign Legionnaire. The pockets are completely different to any WW1 British uniform, either Officer or Enlisted and the style is WAAAAAY off for anything from WW2 (and the film is set in the interwar period).

This Belgian jacket looks pretty close
