The long bar across the top of the weapon is actually a white flag launcher.  All French infantry weapons are equipped with white flag deployment devices of one kind or another.

How well does the FAMAS stand up to being dropped?  I would think the frogs would know a thing or two about making their guns drop resistant by now....

Ahh, the FAMAS.  I want one.

In the typically obtuse French fashion, they're equiped with 25 round magazines.

Plus, the FAMAS is not optimised to full power 5.56x45 NATO, but uses a downloaded cartridge instead.

In fairness they weren't gonna shoot anyone anyway.

Lazy Louie's [%|] Used Gun-a-Roma in the Ivory Coast says he'll have some slightly used, never fired, dropped only once FAMAS' available in the next few days. Remember, Tuesdays are Two for One Day! Prices so low, he's pratically giving them away. Oh, ask him about great deals on SA85's...

Those guys may be Foriegn Legion, one of the most elite forces in the world.

(And for the French bashers, no Frenchman can enlist, although officers are pulled from the French army)

There were fewer of them imported than the SIG 550/551's. Believe the number was around 150 brought in before the '89 cutoff.

I still hate the FAMAS. I saw them down in Kosovo a couple years ago carried by the pacifist French in their "combat shorts". I would trade an SA-80 for a FAMAS - and I REALLY dislike the British bullpup.Even the reworked SA-80's are being dumped by the British SAS and similar groups to maintain their Canadian C7's (M16A2 family). Even after the SA-80's were rebuilt by Heckler and Koch in Germany they are still problematic POS. While I've heard good about the Steyr-AUG, I would never go into battle with a FAMAS or an SA-80 - both which seemed to be disliked by their respective armies downrange. [soapbox]

BTW - I saw a .22lr version of the FAMAS in Paris a month ago. Kind of interesting to look at......

Many years back, I was sent by Uncle Sam to attend French Commando School (Commando Entrainment Camp)... it was honestly a good course and parts of it were pretty tough, they have a big thing with working at heights (you get a really cool breast badge though!).

Anywho, a few days into the course we were on an O-Course of sorts and having some problems at one of the stations, the instructor was "encouraging" us and yelling that if we did not make it we would not be "French Commandos"... To wit, I turned and ditched my gear, approached said instructor and replyed "your breaking my heart... it means so much to me to be an elite part of the only standing army in the world that has never won a friggin war!".

Needless to say, this comment really greased the skids and made the next week soooooo much better for me [;)]

We had a meeting last week, you must have missed it.

Henceforth we shall substitute Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys for the term French.

So that would be "F*ck the CESM's"
And the formal version of the greeting:  Bonjour-r-r-r-r-r-r, ya cheese eatin' sur-r-r-r-ender monkey!

(Edited fer spellin' and to add that I really like Maynard's sig line!)

Other then the fact the French use, i have never heard anything actually bad about the rifle itself.

The F2 model uses 30rd mags (USGI) The French issue underpowered rounds, but this does not mean it could not accept standard loads.

I believe the technical term for these is LWRs (Limp Wristed Rounds).
